I'm quite disappointed, the talk of interesting names wasn't about Horny James (as Christened by Ian) but anyway, onto todays session. I got there and assumed it was off, James had a heavy night, but to his credit, was going to do some "light" benching, but pulled it out the bag for a big session.

Right, onto the lifting

1) NGP - 25 reps

2) Bench
W/U to 110x3
W/S 5x3 @ 125 - These were tough! But looking back to Februarys comp this was what I finished on, so says it all really were pushing on!

3) Football Bar Shoulder Press 5x10 @ 50

Cracking session, bit of joint pain around my bicep/forearm but used some support thing of James and it seemed to take the edge off.

For the first time in my lifting "career" I have really been struggling with deadlifts, so after consulting a good friend of mine, Mike King (legend in powerlifting circles) he advised me to do lower reps but really up the volume, not to bother programming them, just work hard on low reps, volume, and speed.

So that's what I intend to do, if I'm going to be in this battle with Mark, Scott and James, its time to shake things up.

1) Deadlifts
W/U to 200x2
5x2 @ 220 - tough reps, but good volume at that weight
5x2 @ 180 - focusing in on technique and drive off the floor
5x2 @ 150 - really focused on the bar speed from the floor and leg drive

Nice to have a massive leg pump deadlifting rather than a sore back that these conventional mugs get lol.

2) Cable Rows 5x10 @ 60

Good solid session I think, no messing around. I have my targets for the All England reps wise, the big one being a triple at 240, few months to make it happen!

Good work mark!

It's nice to even be linked in with you guys for the All England...

Healty rivalry going on at the farm currently!!!

Although at a weight of 134 I won't be in the 105's any time soon!

More advice: bulk up!
You'll always struggle in the 105's weighing 98kg. You need to put on another 6kg of muscle.
Nice deadlift session though.

Finally, give up on that "strongman" stuff, it will only dilute your focus.

Your not wrong Ian, ideally by the all England I will be around 102-103kg consistently, and then gain another couple of kg's the following year, although if I go over 105 I have no intention of ever dieting so I will just lift in whatever category I fall, so it will be gain 15kg more after that...

Re strongman, I haven't ever really trained for it, its more if a mate messages me and says there is a comp whenever I will go along for something different, I wont ever focus my training on it I don't think.

Yeah deadlifts were good thanks, I think next week will do lots of 3's or something, not sure yet, keep shaking it up until 6-8 weeks out from All England then it will be a planned build up.

3) Military Press 3x8 @ 52.5

Good session at the Farm this evening, joined by an old farm legend, Malc, great to see him back.

Session as follows:

1) Squats
W/U to 160x3
W/S 182.5, 187.5, 182.5 x 3

2) Deadlifts from blocks just below knee
W/U 100, 140, 180, 220 x 3
W/S 240x8, 250x4, 260x3

The highlight of the evening was the hex battle between Stewart and Frank, ending in 298 and 303 respectively. Amazing stuff.

Good bench session with James this morning, got to see his latest acquisition in action, the slingshot, I'm really undecided on whether I want one, but replacing my horrid bent bar in the shed has to be the priority.

Anyway session as follows:

1) NGP - 25 reps

2) Bench
W/U to 110x3
W/S 5x3 @ 127.5 - these were surprisingly easier than I thought they would be, I do owe a little to these elbow sleeve things James got me for squats, they seem to really keep the pain at bay.

3) Pendlay Rows 5x10 @ 60 - always amazes me how quickly me and James get through these, the weight isn't special, but both getting 50 reps done in under 10 minutes combined is no joke.

Painful deadlift session tonight, I had to drop the assistance exercises, and the remaining speed work as I tore the callouses off my hand on the second set of 215, so plastered it up for the heavy sets, then called it a day.

1) Deadlifts
W/U to 200x3
W/S 5x1 @ 230, 5x2 @ 215 - Trying to get lots of volume in at decent weights

Great bench session this evening, after seeing a motivational video of james benching 150 in a slingshot, I decided to try something silly and see if I could do it, I was expecting to get it moving but not be able to quite bench it, but T&G I did it!

I thought I had better add this to my post in case people thought my 150 was done with a slingshot, it wasn't! Should anyone wish to see it look on my Facebook.

Anyway,

1) NGP 25 reps

2) Bench
W/U to 70x5
Paused - 90, 105, 120 x 3, 135x1, 150x1 (T&G), 2x1 @ 135, 127.5x2
T&G Reps - 3x8 @ 105 (70%)

3) Military Press 3x8 @ 55

3) Cable Rows 4x15 @ 55

Gimmicks, gimmicks, gimmicks.
If you are in pain there is a problem, either let it heal or damage it further!

Should mention in case it wasn't clear above my bench was done WITHOUT a slingshot, I don't really want to get one, I'm happy with current progress Happy

I used a small elbow sleeve thing that seems to take the pressure off a little bit.

Unfortunately I asked Stewart and Kev etc whether they get pain in there elbow squating, seems they do, but just live with it.

Whatever you do lots of benching/squating is going to give you tendonitis etc at some point which is difficult to avoid, so if an elbow sleeve helps it in training I'm all good with that.

However, that being said that's not an excuse for you to ignore shoulder pain, as that's caused by an imbalance in the muscle.
