Constantly elevated levels of insulin are more of an issue to my mind (which the current accepted eating guidelines guarantees)

There was an article in the paper today about some guy who lost 107kg in a year. No excuses for being fat (and complaining about being fat. Some of us want to be fatties).

It's folly to think that you can determine energy expenditure with any degree of accuracy.
The human body is an incredibly complex machine that can run at wildly different levels of efficiencies all related to the hormonal environment it's currently in.

This is what irritates me about these calculations to work out your energy expenditure because you exercise for x hours x times per week at x intensity and have a job that burns x amount of calories, therefore you need to eat x amount of calories to lose weight. It's all bulls**t really isn't it? Nothing more than a starting point.

This guy is doing an experiment to eat 5,000 kcals a day on a clean low carb/high fat diet and see how much weight he puts on.

This is the halfway point:http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/sam-feltham/my-5000-calorie-ex...

Would be interesting to see how that panned out over a few months rather than 3 weeks.

Also, of course he's not really going to gain weight after just embarking on a low carb diet (only 10 days in) - he'll be losing glycogen and water from his system as does everybody who starts a low carb diet.

It would also be interesting to see what the result was on a "normal" diet as a control to see if it was anywhere near the suggested theoretical gain of 1lb per 3,5000 extra calories

When I did an Atkins-like thing many years ago now it was, to my surprise, milk I missed most. I drink much less milk now, so I suspect it'd be potatoes these days.

I found, like everybody else I've discussed it with, that the moment I got a cold the cravings for toast - in my case with good marmalade - were just overwhelming, and that was what knocked me off a regimen that was working very well for me. Never got back on that horse.
