Rob_Bush | Welsh Qualifier for Arnold's Amateur | 01-09-2011 @ 13:05
Member 1323, 449 posts SQ 270, BP 210, DL 320800.0 kgs @ 120kgs UnEq | Just seeing if there is enough interest from Welsh competitors to warrant putting this comp on in early November. We haven't finalised events as it will depend on interest but they may reflect the list below... Axle Deadlift - 300kgish (height TBC) Straps allowed but no suits. Yoke - 400kg over 20m Dumbbell Press - 80kg for reps from floor Farmers & Keg Medley - 150kg Farmers for 15m and then back for 110kg Keg for 15m Stone over Yoke - 150/160kg for reps over 48" This is a rough idea of what we would be contemplating. Remember, this is a Welsh qualifier so it can only contain Welsh competitors. The comp's development will depend on the number of competitors we can attract. Cheers

As far as I'm aware, there has been no talk of the winner being funded to travel to the States. I'd have to speak to Ross Stone as it is a contact of his who has asked for a qualifier to be run. I'll be honest with you though... it's doubtful. Also, to my knowledge there are a fair few who competed at the Welsh who wont be doing this comp anyway for a multitude of reasons - at least one of them being cost implications.

Sadly, aside from the UK's where competitor's costs are reduced dramatically by Glen, any venture outside of the UK suddenly incurs a rather hefty price tag and unless comps are sponsored by very affluent companies there will always be an ongoing issue here. I forget the exact set-up here but I think any Welsh competitors who qualify will go through to a National qualifier to decide who goes to the States. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Indeed. Unless the protocol has changed, Glenn refunds the athlete POST comp, so the athlete still has to find 500-600 notes to make the comp This was the case 2-3 years ago anyway....it may have changed since

I know it's an initial outlay but for a prestigious title and the fact that you get your money back it becomes an expense worth finding. But nevertheless, hard to find for many.

Not as much of an outlay this year for those who travelled by Ferry. Don't know if it's the same set-up for flights.

a large fingered spastic that demolishes plant Member 89, 31706 posts SQ 260, BP 220, DL 290770.0 kgs @ 142kgs UnEq | for me when i did compete it would cost me around £100 to £150 for a hotel, & £200 for Flights if i was using the ferry and taking the car then it would be £300+ depending on the time of the year. then there the travel costs on the main land Train Bus's Hire car fuel. so for me and the rest of the Island lads that post here for us to compete its already expensive. Say Davy went on to do the Arnolds Qualifier and got through to them he would be looking at a over £1000+ to travel from here. this is why i think for the level of competitors sponsorship helps immensely if the Arnold's is asking for a UK Qualifier then why not help the lads with some of the costs to get there! for instance if say Ed Hall got to go but couldn't afford it then it went to the Next guy and he's in the same position then i dont think thats a good think for the sport as the best person isn't going. it might be worth approaching some of the american companies that heavily sponsor the arnolds to see if they could help. anyway enough of my 2p worth Hope you get enough guys to do the comp.

Paid for 1 person for a ferry crossing from Strandrar or Hollyhead. Cost travelling there over 120 petrol and 6+ hours drive each way for me. Hotel was reduced rate of 160 for 3 or 4 nights otherwise it's a shared room. 1 meal a day provided. Cost me neg -£300 odd and that was inc the prize money of 500-600. Would never change going but money defo played a part and still is in Strongman for me.
