Some Scottish representation in WSM would be nice.

Can't be that far out of reach Andy?

Open to all comers, to ensure everyone that gets to compete in a National title final is of a high enough standard. In recent years we’ve averaged round about 18 or 19 entrants. This year there was a low turn out with only 15 guys.
For once it wasn’t near Baltic conditions. Stuart Murray’s gym proved an excellent venue, all indoors bar the arm over arm. All very well thought through, no equipment problems, well clued up and hard working helpers, obligatory burger van, and good toilet facilities.
Things are all starting to get very civilised and far more participant and spectator friendly.
Thanks to Brian and the lads from unit 20 there was even a stall set up providing all sorts of goodies.
WSM finalist and multiple Scottish winner Jamie Barr was our referee, assisted by BSM competitor Raymond Christie who is on the road back after injury. On the scoreboard as ever the diligent Jeanette Murray.

Stuart Murray was first up on the draw for the arm over arm, a heavy five link chain to be pulled 20 metres over a rough surface. For most of us who knew of Stuart’s pedigree on this event we pretty much were expecting the winning pull and we weren’t disappointed. The 49 year old veteran gave a lesson in arm over arm, and the rest of the lads would’ve been better served by watching the Master’s technique than hanging around the other end watching a moving chain. Stuart has the iron grip that allowed him to go in for the rope fast with out double wrapping it round his wrist and completed the course in a blistering 38.00 sec.
Christopher Innes was hot on Stuarts heels, again with good form and using his height to get great long pulls in taking fewer pulls than anyone and coming in with a time of 38.76.Goose is seldom the star of the qualifiers but always seems to peak bang on for the final, this year he was carrying a calve strain which was to get progressively worse throughout the day.
Louis Maclean, Stevie Cherry, Frank Connolly and Stuart White, one of our 4 new faces at this year's comp all displayed decent form and completed the course.
The rest of the field pulling between 4.89 and 15.84 metres, for some it was a case of hands too small and fleshy to get any decent grip,. Even double wrapping the rope taking up too much time and energy. For others it was a case of some really ropey technique (pun intended), lack of fitness and obstruction of girth. The rope itself was picking up dirt and water as the event went on. This is where experienced competitors should know to wipe down rope before attempt.

260KG SQUAT

Andy Cairney 3 times Scotland’s strongest bridesmaid (sorry, runner up) took top spot with 8 fairly comfortable squats. Andy was also sporting a calve injury picked up at the UK’s but seemingly well on the mend.
Stuart Bell was the man closest to this with fitness being the issue here, Stuart took top honours at last year’s UK qualifiers in max squat with 350kg but ran out of steam here on 7 reps.
Louis on 6,others on 1 to 5 reps.
Allan, Gary, and Stuart White, giving it all out gutsy attempts for failing to register a lift

MEDLEY:FRAME CARRY 320KG X 11M,YOKE 350KG X 11M,LOAD KEG 120KG TO HIGH PLATFORM,LOAD FIELD STONE 140KG TO PLATFORM.

Gary Burt a first timer to the opens was first up and set a decent standard by finishing all 4 disciplines in 84.68.
This was to be Ken Nowicki’s event, looking really psyched up and ready he exploded into action, flying with the frame, in fact I think he may have been the only one who managed the frame with no drops. Just as fast on the yoke, keg and stone giving him a winning time of 38.70sec.The far more experienced Louis and Goose being the only guys to get close to this time with 39.00 and 39.48 respectively. A stumble with the frame exacerbating Goose’s calve injury which was now obviously swollen, it was looking like Goose might have retired here but the big man just strapped it up and limped on.
Andy Cairney, Stevie Cherry, and Adam Sauberlich all finishing the course in the time ,a mixture of success for the rest, as you may expect 3 of the guys with smaller fleshy hands that struggled on the chain pull must’ve been hating this event as the grip just couldn’t handle the frame and they were stopped at the first hurdle.

STUART B 1 3.00M

LOG LIFT 110KG ON A 65 DEGREE ANGLE.

110kg may at first glance not sound like much, but Jamie was very strict on the rules here and disallowed many lifts were the backside came off the bench, everyone was made to lockout and wait for count at top.
Frank Connolly two times 105kg Scottish champion. was in a class of his own blasting out 14 very comfortable presses without even a jerk coming from the legs. The steepness of the angle and the strict isolation of the delts and triceps saw many guys starting out strong and then just hitting the wall. Only our newcomer to the opens Stephen Mullens failing to get one rep. The log and the deadlift being crucial as a failure in either of these events would deny you a chance of going through to the final.
A decent event, and while seldom seen these days, a valid test of strength nonetheless, good to see a bit of variation thrown in.

DEADLIFT 280KG FOR REPS

Okay, so in the last two years the press and deadlift were the first two events, both eliminators, so if at this stage there was enough guys who failed on these lifts then a quick calculation gave us our finalists, meaning the next four events were practically redundant with the guys through just doing a walk through, making the qualifier a bit boring. By mixing the running order up a bit it definitely made for a more fun comp spectator wise. However, some of the guys at this stage had done their sums and were able to take the foot of the gas a bit here so the top guys were nowhere near flat out here. Stuart Murray and Andy Cairney both quitting at 5 with one or two clearly still in hand. Ken and Ewan showing good form on 4.Stuart Bell, Stevie Cherry and a neoprene and gaffa strapped Goose pulling up 3 a piece. Heart break here for Frank, Gary and Stuart White who despite getting a rep in the log effectively put paid to any chances of progressing to final right here.
I think I can say that both Gary Burt and Stephen Mullin as first timers will be content with their performances as they stepped up a level into the opens and gave a pretty good account of themselves, I’m certain they’ll both be back next year even stronger.
Once again it’s Frank Connolly who scores highly on all other events proving that he is a great all rounder but falls foul to the eliminator rule owing to his weak deadlift.
I reckon we all felt Stuart White’s pain here: after spending a back breaking 20 seconds with the bar just above the knee, an eternity in deadlift time, we were all willing him to lift and just as he got the lift locked out and got the good lift call from Jamie he did the unthinkable and let the weight drop to the floor “No lift”.
Ouch! That lift would probably have given him a place in the final at first attempt, but them’s the rules.

• A much more enjoyable qualifier for all concerned than recent years.
• However, a bit alarming that out of the whole of Scotland we have only 15 people up for tackling these weights. Scotland as a whole is well served in terms of first timers, novice and weight category competitions and the people running them are to be commended for their excellent efforts in promoting the growth of the sport.
• The open category is in desperate need of some new blood. Even with some notable athletes missing; Lee Allan off on honeymoon (no dedication) Raymond Christie and Dave Eastwood still out through injury we still need some fresh talent to come to the fore. Where are they?
• Of all the guys competing I would say the most improved athlete is Ken Nowicki whose strength, technique and attention to detail are making him the guy to watch out for.
• The events for the final are rumoured to be based on the qualifier but will not be made available to the guys till six weeks out.
