Being the best at the time is down to winning. Being a great is more to do with just how dominant of a champion you are.

The fact Coan won world titles made him the best in his day, but the fact he did it so convincingly and for so long is what makes him great. That much is clear, it's what makes him great but the greatest ever is far more subjective because it involves comparing not only the athlete but the era they competed in.

That's almost impossible to compare so it ends up being a popularity contest. But he was great, that's for sure.

Ed Coan: 6 IPF GOLD MEDALS now BANNED for Doping

Inaba: 17 IPF GOLD MEDALS, winning until his 50s

Its obvious who is the greatest of all time in terms of winning things that matter and not cheating!

The point I was making was that is too simplistic a comparison. You would need to compare the era, their competitors etc for it to be meaningful.

Yes Inaba won and by all accounts he was one of the greats, but in a comparison between Coan you'd have to look at who he won against. What was the level of competition during that time, by what margin was he winning and compare that to Coan and his factors.

Who actually said he was the greatest powerlifter anyway? One of the greatest for sure but as with all debates its a point of view, suppose you could vote and find the majoirty view and the one with most votes is greatest ever.

For many people, it comes down to Coan inventing the push-press. For others it was his tireless work on gay rights. For a select few - he was considered "strong".

Hopefully, this clears up any confusion Kyle. Happy

There are raw guys that out-total his equipped total! Great physique and interesting personality, but not THE greatest either.

He doubled 1000

Coolest powerlifter of all time, and one of the best squatters.

Truth be told we will likely never know how strong he really was! I'm sure he still got decent carryover from his equipment!

They are all or were all heavier than him, obviously there are going to be people heavier than him that can lift more.

Who said Coan is the greatest? I much prefer Malanichev and Belyaev, Olech etc.
