Owing to the upper insides of both my thighs giving me grief when I squat, I've had to bring my stance right in. It feels ok, but very unstable at the bottom of the squat.

Anyone had to do anything similar? Any advice?

Yes, but I never went closer than shoulder width.

More importantly, what kind of pains, specifically where and what aggravates them.

The pains are right at the top of the inner thigh, either side of the Crown Jewels. They're like an extreme case of DOMS.

I can feel it just as I get to parallel and below, same on the way up. I don't squat too wide anyway (shoulder width or a bit more) but I can't feel the pain at all when I bring my feet right in, about a foot apart.

Had it for a couple of weeks now. Went away for a bit, then came back after a speed squat session.

If it turns out you really have to change stance, it may just be a matter of mastering a different groove. I tend to forget how much balance is involved in squats until I see someone new to free-weight squats. Quite often, they are all over the shop. If you've been squatting wide stance for a while and abruptly change, it might take a while before you acquire the control that you've now instinctively got in your usual stance.

Instability at the bottom of a narrow stance squat usually comes from a poor footwear choice. What did you have on your feet?

I take it you have checked for lumps along the usual herniation lines, or gaps/dents where there shouldnt be any? Much as I hate to sound scary I am thinking potential inguinal hernia if you have anything bulging as the pain sounds familiar. On another tack it could just be a strain on the transvers or lower ab wall. I'm assuming the pains don't go down the legs, but in or up as is most common with this type of strain?

Ps - just covering common injuries of this type I have seen, feel free to ignore me

wide stance squatting is overrated. Too much of it will lead to testicular shrinkage.

do you have short hip flexors, more specifically Psoas muscles. I have poor flexibility in this region and have widened my stance. I think the solution is to drop the weight and work back up.
