The OP hasnt stated why he wants to take these supps. Hes mentioned price of food. However for kcals normal food is cheaper than powdered supps.

If your trying to gain weight id rather have a pint if milk than a protein shake etc. More bang for your buck. As long as you tolerate milk.

Off course nought wrong with a protein shake. Easy way to top up intake of proteins and protein per £ is cost effective.

You also need to take into account what it's for and whether you need hydrolised or isolate.

Do you really think that there is a difference between the two (results wise) ?

The only difference between isolate and concentrate is percentage of protein - I wonder if powders have any greater effect than food

I know that chocolate milk has come out as hugely impressive in post workout studies

Yea pretty much this.
Essentially you should be looking at WPC80, whey protein concentrate 80%.
Various manufacturers supply this unflavoured product which yields 80% protein content. This is the standard byproduct of cheese manufacture which is sold to the supplement industry.
Different companies then add colouring, flavouring, sweeteners, creatine, etc etc etc (often pushing the protein content down to 78%) put it in a pretty tub and charge you 20 quid a kilo.
I prefer to buy the WPC80 in its unflavoured state for about a tenner a kilo and add my own flavourings if I want to, although I rarely bother.
The same product, the same amino acid profile, it's just the additives which make a difference to the end result and price.

There was quite a big scandal recently where certain companies products were tested and came in well under label claims. There are some companies I wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

Wrong! Some of these companies are very greedy. I heard of a protein powder with 1% protein. http://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/comments/uva9t/big_reddit_prot...

For people who rely solely on expensive powders, you could be in for a surprise if you took your "Gold Plated, Award Winning" £99 per tub "protein" for testing.

This is far from an exhaustive list but off the top of my head ...

Myprotein
Bulk Powders
The Protein Works

I'm basing that on price as well as perceived quality.
