So first time doing them today, normally do belt cleans, and ive found i suck at them and am limited more by the clean than i am the press. What would people recommend to improving at them. How would you go about training them and any assistance?

Same as everything. Practice.

Getting yourself a nice cake shelf wont hurt either.

Learn to pull the bar higher and have it sit on top of your belly rather than it drop down onto your belt

Also train high pulls (both normal grip and wide grip)

You could also have the bar set in a power rack at the height you'd want it to be sat on your belly and train the last part of the pull; getting it to your shoulders etc...

It's also learning to lean back in the pull to get yourself under it that can be hard to pick up; well I found it was but I'm 6ft 4 so it's a fair height it needs pulling to!

With high pulls though they will be double overhand, unless u mean practice high pulling on an axle with under/overhand?

best progress I have ever made on axle was when I was

once a week going for a pb single, triple or five (clean every rep or just one clean and then pushpresses)

in a separate session once a week after squats and deads doing doh beltless high pulls and actually landing the bar for a split second on top of my belly. working up to a weight that I miss then doing 3singles at the previous weight.
sometimes with chains
