I dont think doing more than one novice is as much the issue as keeping doing them when you are past novice level. I did 4 but the first 2 I came 2nd from last and 3rd from last so I was barely even novice level then. I know guys whove done more than that, but they arent strong enough for the opens and may not ever be. I think its better that they kept competing in the novices than just leave the sport altogether. im sure some will disagree with that though!

this novice issue will always be around i think
it really is up to the promoter to tell the guys move up or bog off
which is what i will be doing at my comps
Happy

Hit the nail on the head, some promoters don't seem to want to do this though. Confused

at the begining of the comp it was announced that the open comp weights would be going up from 120k log to 130k, farmer from 130k to 140k, deadlifts from 280k to 300k as the comp went on it was decided to keep the farmers and deadlifts to the original weights at that stage i had already done the log and farmers so it was to late to go back into the opens. i have done 120k log for one rep and 280k deadlift for one rep in training and there is no way i would have topled the 480k tyre.im looking forward to doing a few open comps next year. all the best for the worlds !!!

Like I said I'm not slagging you off and if you're not quite ready then you're not ready! I was just curious as to how far behind those lifts you were. Good luck for next year! Just pick an open that you can lift everything and get stuck in!!

I know what you're saying! One of the guys in the novice competed in an open only a few weeks back that I was refing! He probably could've lifted everything in the open! Admitedly not many reps on the log or deadlift but he can do them! These are the people IMO that should be being told to step up to the mark! If you can lift everything in the open why would you wanna do the novice?? There really seems to be a lot of this going on this year! IMO it is down to the athlete, he will know if he is ready and the people around them (training partners etc) need to give them a shove!

Tom?

Yeah Tom and Phil! IMO both are above novice level but not quite open level so if an intermediate comes up then they could enter that but I would rather they just trained hard for the rest of the year and beginning of next year and enter the opens at some point in 2010.

I agree that there should be no setamount of novice comps, some guys either will take a long time or will never be ready and by all means keep doing the novices but the minute you are above that level or placing top 3 in a good standard novice then it is either time to step up or train hard for a few months and then step up!

Do organisers of comps actually look at the applications forms submitted?

If so, surely it should be simple enough to look a ta guys stats, he has 120 log & 280 DL, he wants to do the Novice, they tell him 'f**k off', its opens or nothing at all!

Just curious. Dont see the point for asking for the stats they do if not going to read them. It only takes 5 mins surely to look at stats of 20 novice applications?

Novice should mean 1st year in comp no matter what weight you can do!! If the sport had a better structure things would be better.

At my novice comp there were people there that shouldn't off been as we all know! As with probably all comps. Yes I did have people competing at 23 stone against people at 13-14 stone but again I let them compete as in there first year in competition. Yes again I did have lads in it that did novice comps over two years ago as myself and Simon commented on!! If everybody turned up on the day we could of split it into novice/inter comps but 28 lads sent in forms and only 17 turned up.

I will be putting something on here and SDF next week with and idea on structure and all comments will be taken in as long as positive. NOT c**tY ONES AS ONLY I DO THEM!!!

Yes Terry there are not enough intermediate comps on. Not being funny how can you class an intermediate?

I don't think they need to be called intermediate comps. Why not just organised a lighter open comp. Some of the open comps are becoming very heavy and this will shy the newcomers away.

This would surely be up to the promotors whether they opt for a heavy or light open.

As it stands there is becoming to many classes. I don't think the structure needs to change much but certainly promotors need to take a little more care on the athletes that enter their comps.

We need to keep things simple, we could write a guidance book... but who would write it and keep it up to date... no one will commit the time as they have to either train or run events.. which as we all know takes time, hence the simplicity route. Promotors and athletes just need to be sensible. I also believe it is down to the more experienced athleted to help and advise on what comps their understudies do.

For example Terry mentioned earlier that he has a few boys that will be working towards an open level next year instead of competing in more novice comps.
