Assistance work. Wearing a vest, two fleeces, boxers, long johns and trackie bottoms.

Dumbbell Arm Curls
20s for 12 x 3 sets
12.5s for 20 x 3 sets

Side Lateral Raises
7.5s for 15 x 5 sets (it was probably 6 but was at least 5)

Shoulder Horn
7.5s for 20 x 3 sets

T Pulls
Band for 20 x 3 sets

W Pulls
Band for 20 x 3 sets

Finish.

Upped the reps on the curls. 20s felt remarkably light for something I used to really strain to manage.

I think I can safely put the light dumbbells up to 10 kg - but maybe when I do I'll regret it, it's a 33% increase after all. One way to find out.

Tomorrow should be a rest day, but I might do something surprising. Watch this space...

Came back in to find the air fryer on the floor minus it's contents. It seems to still work, but they'll still get shunned for the rest of the day. I hope they think it was worth it.

Not a work out as such today. More an exploration of what was still possible. I haven't deadlifted for over a year, partly because I can't deadlift and play golf in the same week, as each hurts the other, and partly because my right knee, more specifically the osteoarthritis, has been sore for months now. But for the last week it hasn't been, so

Deadlift

75 for 3 - yay, no pain, I can still do it
75 for 3
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1 - what I'd hoped against hope I would manage
130 for 1
140 for 1 - shocked myself
Finish

Absolutely chuffed to bits. Yes, there might have been another 5 kilos there, but 145 wouldn't have told me any more than 140 told me. Can't believe I've retained so much of my strength after such a long break.

Happy, happy, happy, off for a walk...

Good to see you dead lifting Happy

Do you think dead lifts have any carryover at all to bench?

They certainly make the back stronger, and that doesn't hurt the bench, plus I just feel more robust and in better physical shape when I'm deadlifting. Let's just hope the knee doesn't protest too much. Happy I'm just staggered I can still do 140. Happy

Bench

Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 for 1
135 for 1
125 for 3 x 2 sets
115 for 5 x 2 sets
105 for 8
Finish

It should have been twos sets with 105 but I ran out of time. In truth, I got a slight touch on the last rep (which I didn't ask for and may or may not have needed) so maybe I finished at just the right time.

I thought if I did two sets with each weight rather than one, I'd effectively be doubling my workout. Certainly worked myself to the limit. And I upped my top single by another 2.5, so all in all a session I should be happy with.

I haven't trained since I benched on Thursday. A mixture of life getting in the way, weariness, and sore elbows. But it's Monday, so time to bench again.

bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
120 for 1
137.5 for 1
127.5 for 2
125 for 2
117.5 for 4
115 for 4
107.5 for 6
105 for 8.

I felt so creaky on the way up it was a wonder I managed 120!

The plan was 3s, 5s and 8s, but I just didn't have the strength/fight/desire to battle for the final rep. Maybe if I'd had a spotter... However I now feel wrecked, so I obviously put the work in. Sometimes you just have to take what's there.

On the plus side, got my 137.5, so the 2.5 per session progression continues. With any luck, I'll see 140 again on Thursday. Also chuffed with the 105 for 8 after only getting 6 with 107.5. Horrible day to train, bar very cold and wind roaring outside.

Thought of doing some assistance, but I'd had enough. Back and biceps tomorrow.

Back & Biceps

Instead of doing half a dozen different exercises, I decided to focus on seated rows today. The movement is, for all intents and purposes, the exact opposite of bench press, so if bench works my front well as a single exercise, so too should seated row work my back. That was the theory anyway.

Seated Row (four different grips used with each weight)

50 for 12 x 4 sets
60 for 10 x 4 sets
70 for 8 x 4 sets
80 for 6 x 4 sets
90 for 4 x 4 sets
100 for 10 - wide grip only

Dumbbell Arm Curls

20s for 10 x 2 sets
20 for 15 x 1 sets

Finish

Rest day tomorrow, and hopefully I'll see a 140 bench again on Thursday.

The quest to regain strength continues

Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
120 for 1
140 for 1 - just, but I'll take it.
125 for 2
120 for 3
115 for 5
110 for 6
105 for 7
100 for 8
Finish
Wrecked!

Getting it back, step by step. I think the 140 drained me, because I couldn't get the third rep with 125 or the 4th rep with 120. Sounds daft, but I wasn't brave/committed enough to attempt the extra rep without a spotter. Maybe on another day I would have got them, but not today. But from the 115 onward, I hit all the reps. Wrecked me, but got them, hope I see the gains, couldn't have worked any harder, that's for sure.

Short rest, then a dog walk...

Sh's an escape artist and reactive to other dogs, so the window would never be open in the first place.Grin

Essential but boring stuff that should have been done yesterday but, for various reasons, wasn't.

Band Work
Y Pulls - 20 x 3 sets
T Pulls (Palms In) - 20 x 3 sets
T Pulls (Palms Out) - 20 x 3 sets
W Pulls - 20 x 3 sets

Shoulder Horn
7.5s for 20 x 3 sets

Dumbbell Arm Curls
20s for 10 x 3 sets

Finish.

Feeling sluggish throughout. One of these 'didn't want to be there' sessions that it's easy to miss, so in a way still pleased with myself in spite of the lethargy. The muscles still got the work they needed, and hopefully balance is maintained.

Hope I'm more up for it tomorrow. It's bench.

Bought myself a 50 lb weight today. I'm sure I'll find stuff to do with it.

I'm a bit disappointed with myself. I have zero motivation to train, despite the British Classic Bench being less than two weeks away. I had to drag myself out to the gym, and every set was an effort mentally. Maybe the weather's got something to do with it? It's relentlessly awful, and the short walk from the house to the garage is off putting. Hopefully things will change soon. There's only so often you can put yourself through the process.

Bench

Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 3
120 for 2
125 for 1 to commands
135 for 1 to commands (Pause might have been a bit short when reviewing video)
125 for 3
120 for 4
115 for 5
110 for 6
105 for 8
Finish,

The plan was 105 x 7, then 100 x 8, but I was running short of time and I did a deal with myself that if I could do the 8 with 105 I would stop there.

Well, in spite of my bad attitude, I got my planned first and second lifts for the British, and then hit all my reps with relative ease, including the 125 for 3 and the 120 x 4 that I missed last time. So all in all a good session. Just wish it could be done with better grace.

Feeling much better today than yesterday. Maybe it's just bench boredom?!

Seated Rows
70 for 10 x 19 sets - yes, 19
70 for 20 - because I can.

Lat Pulldowns
55 for 10 x 3 sets

Dumbbell Arm Curls
20s for 15
20s for 12
20s for 10

Finish.

The rows were done 5 sets underhand, 5 sets overhand, 5 sets narrow and 5 sets wide, in that order. Filthy day, but the power was off and I had no distractions/excuses. I felt myself hitting the energy wall on the second set of curls. Hardly surprising, a lot of reps with a 'proper' weight were done today.

Old school entertainment today, fished out the old ipod and wore headphones.

Rest day tomorrow. I think I might need it!

Thursday Bench

Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 3
120 for 2
125 for 1 - commands
135 for 1 - commands. Held it longer on the chest, and yet it felt easier
125 for 3
120 for 4
115 for 5
110 for 6
105 for 8
10 for 10
Finish.

Good workout. Felt stronger than Monday. Potentially there was another rep at both 125 and 120. Hit every rep. This workout seems very effective for getting strength back quickly.

Still not particularly motivated, I have to confess. I put off starting by picking up the guitar for 20 minutes. But once I have the weight in my hands I seem to be fine. Self preservation, I suppose.

One and a half sessions to go before the British. I have something very demanding in mind for Monday, and on Wednesday morning, before the ferry sails, I'll go through my warm up and my first and second lifts one last time.

The last full session before the British Champs on Sunday, and I'm delighted to say my best session in ages. Strength definitely returning!

Bench
Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 3
120 for 2
125 to commands - easy
135 to commands - easy, I'm delighted to write
125 for 4*
120 for 5*
115 for 6*
110 for 7*
105 for 8
100 for 3**
Finish

*Added a rep
**My left hand got a strange pain, best described as arthritic, so I stopped straight way.

Overall, delighted. A few short weeks ago, I was struggling to double 125 and 130 was my limit. Now a paused 135, long pause too, flew up, and the 4 with 125 was easier than the double a few weeks ago. This quick strength builder programme has done it's job, one last gentle run through the gears on Wednesday morning, and that's it. I leave in the best shape I could have hoped for. I'm still 20 Kg away from where I want to be, but it is what it is.
