Hi Guys (of both sexes!). I'm considering an option to set up a supplements shop (no details atm, I'll advertise properly on Sugden at the appropriate time, so please don't ask!). It would be really useful to get some feedback on what products people rate, and what they don't, at the business plan stage. Anyone got any experience of dealing directly with the big companies? Which are good, which are bad...? Any contacts that might be useful? Also, what complementary products would you recommend? I would hope to eventually have a full powerlifting stock, but that market's too small to be my main focus at this stage. Feel free to pm if you'd prefer. Thanks in anticipation...

robocop opened his shop in glasgow a while back and sounds like he is doing ok.

MMA gear mate - seems to be a good way to make some money.

if you would stock powerlifting gear, people would travel far and wide so they could try the stuff on first before buying it. Maybe you could also order stuff in for them if size is not found.

I cant believe there isnt a shop like that in UK - there are several in finland!

As far as products go, i am probably not your core market as a vegan, so i wont suggest anything Grin

Can hook you up with some builder bars and other vegan protein things tho Grin (the lactose intolerant & vegan market in UK is totally neglected at the moment when it comes to protein bars... Powders are pretty common these days)

At the moment, I just use Glucosamine, Multi-vits & Omega 3. I get these from either Healthy Direct or My Protein, which ever has the better deal. I've found these companies to be the most reliable/well stocked.

When I've more money, I also have bulk whey and liquid egg whites from My Protein.

Can't offer any info that will help other than that mate.

Martin, just to reiterate what Joni said re powerlifting gear, if you can devise some sort of set-up where customers can try before they buy, you're onto a big winner.

Not helpful maybe, but your biggest prob re supplements is the internet

A good friend of mine has a shop, I get stuff at what he buys it for, but can still be found for the same price on the internet!

Could be. But I can also see what he sells it for in the shop, with my price being considerably cheaper

yeah internet is there - and it looks like its going to be a keeper.

But people still use these shops. The one in manchester is doing very well!

Same with travel agents - internet has cheaper trips but some people will still want to go to an agent (not me).

Thats why you have to focus on adding value. Advice, customer service, and so on. If the price is reasonable, folk dont mind paying it.

A lot of the supp shop income seems to come from occasional/recreational lifter anyway. They think if they eat some protein they will get big and ripped Grin

Thanks for early feedback guys. I had planned to sell in the shop at internet prices, but apparently I might have distributor status withdrawn if I do that! But if one company withdraws status and 8 others don't that might not be a problem. I am committed to powerlifting stuff as well, but it's going to be an add on and not part of the initial core business. There are a couple of thousand, or less, active powerlifters in the UK, and not many of them in this neck of the woods, so I can't rely on that market to generate the initial profits needed to sustain the business. Keep the comments coming...Happy

I'm sure that a few websites have a set up whereby "most popular products" are listed in a search, in other words, you can see what products they are allegedly selling the most of. It might all be a marketing scam though.

Myself, I'd buy nothing from you - if you can get it over the counter, I don't want it.
