Yes, I agree with you both. A blindly followed Westside template can lead to problems on meet day. There is no doubt that week after week of heavy parallel box squats and GM's will make you a strong mofo BUT ON MEET DAY will you be able to walk out a supramaximal weight and squat it to BELOW parallel in a tight squat suit and knee wraps? You can do all the DE work you like off a low box but you'll find (at least at my club) when the weight gets heavy on ME day the box suddenly becomes a parallel or even slightly above parallel box. There is one guy at my club who can GM more than he can squat which IMO is f**king ridiculous! It is easy to kid yourself at times on ME days.

Nice to see your journal here Doc. I had one year at New College before I was thrown out for being thick. Managed to get a few visits to the Iffley Road gym before I left though - Doc D from PLUK and MT was basically running the PLing gym there at that time. I got pinned under a 70kg bench when I was the only person in the gym - took me while to lift it off.

Memories.

Thanks for warm reception lads!

Today's benching:
60x5,...82.5x5 x 2 sets....95x5....110x2....112.5x2x2...117.5x2...122.5x 1....100x6....

All reps were paused to meet standard. No probs.

Iffley isn't a bad gym as far as powerlifting/weightlifting friendly gyms in the area are concerned. The only problem is that it gets rammed with spotty kids just milling about and we (the powerlifting club) can't get the permission to book the gym out for our sessions. I'm obviously not a student but am an honourary member of their team because they respect my work ethic and I very rarely miss squad sessions despite being the only person with a job on the team! We have 3 lads who will soon start kicking ass on the local powerlifting scene:

- a guy with a 275 raw pull @ 82 BW. He is going to hit the BDFPA next year and take the deadlift record.
- a guy who lifted at the IPF junior worlds last year (representing Canada). He has a 780kg total @ 110 which includes a 302 deadlift.

so as you can see the standard is pretty good for a student club. Makes a refreshing change from just lifting on my own at 7am before work which I did for a few years.
