I can't imagine you as a 76kg rex!
Cheers John mate.
i did a 25km ride this morning. Took me just under 57 mins.
av. speed 26km/hr
max speed 47km/hr
2 short, sharp hills - the first 3.6km long and the second 2.4km long. So about 6km of climbing in total.

32km ride - 1hr20min
av speed - 24.6km/hr
max speed - 49km/hr
Legs no problem. Even heart and lungs no problem. Slight issues with lower back but maybe this is just me getting used to the aggressive riding position.
Can't wait to get some cleats now.
I'm going to keep doing these sub 50km rides a few times a week. I think they're good for building base fitness on the bike.

Life sounds hectic at the moment Doc, not seeing the family for days at a time is tough!
I did so enjoy your tale in Mr Pete's journal, it ticked me for a good hour

Hey mate. Yeah it's a ball ache but means to an end. This would suck if I had to do it for the rest of my working life but I won't so I'll put up with it for now.
Which one did you find funny? The one of me reminding the bride that there was no one to walk her down the aisle moments before she was about to get married? Or the one of me nearly s**tting myself on the motorway the morning after a curry?
:-)

Not much lifting going on these days. Just can't seem to get it in. Also fell off bike on way to work today. A few scrapes and a dented ego but nothing bad. Been doing about 35km a day and my average speed has been creeping up. I'm certain this is just me getting better at cycling rather than improved fitness.

Sorry but I did sn***er a little - I always do when people fall off bikes, at least you only hurt yer ego! Is it wrong I laugh more hwne its a kid and they fall in a puddle>?

lol! It's pretty embarrassing.
I've been doing about 30-40km a day for the last fortnight. On work days this has been 16km through the commute then about 20km in the evening after the kids have been put to bed. On non-work days I've been doing 40km rides.
Verdict so far:
- It's good fun. There's a massive geek element to cycling though (bike gear/clothing/mechanics/monitors/GPS systems/performance meters etc etc) and I don't think I'm enough of a nerd to get excited enough about it.
- People spend A LOT of money on cycling. There are plenty of fit blokes whizzing about on really expensive machines round Oxford. A small part of me can't bear but think that the machine plays a big part here. Basically the more you spend on bike and kit, the better you'll be and the fitter you'll be able to get.
- It's great outdoor exercise and a good way to discover your environs. I've seen bits of Oxford and surrounding villages I'd never knew existed and I've been here 10 years.
- It torches calories especially if you're a heavy cyclist. There's a pro cyclist called Greipel who is nicknamed 'the gorilla' and he weighs 82kg at his heaviest. As a 90kg man who can squat over 200kg I'm a monster in the endurance cycling word.
- Maybe it's just lack of bloat, but I feel leaner even though the scales say I've lost 1-2kg at most. Strength is probably quite low at the moment especially bench pressing but I don't mind too much.

Been cycling about 150km a week and reaping some newbie gains. Descents on a road bike still scare the s**t out of me but I'm learning to trust the bike and use the brakes far less frequently. Hit 65 km/hr on a short, sharp descent this lunchtime. Exhilarating.

Today I did some squats up to 140x8, stiff legs and some bench pressing. Spent the whole time wishing I was on my bike instead. I'm in a funny place at the moment with my lifting.

50km bike ride
2hrs3mins
Amazing scenery. Some pretty hard exposed stretches with aggressive cross winds.

It certainly was mate. Pretty bad today too. Wet and windy.
Did 47.2km
Hard work today. Wasn't entirely in the mood and the weather was awful which made me want to go home almost straight away. Got lost round a little village called Brill so ended up getting off my bike a few times and going back on myself which isn't great at the best of times. Ending up doing a completely different route to the one I had planned which was even more demoralising. Anyway, I feel better for going out now.

Did 55.9km today
The first half was great. The first hour was probably the best cycling I've done to date. Covered 27km in that first hour which included a few short, sharp inclines. Within this hour, I did some nice pieces including a 9km flat stretch at 33.3km/h and a 1 mile stretch at -0.4% at 39.2km/h generating 263W of power.
Then I got lost, did a short detour and...died a death. At one point, I even checked the tires for a puncture as it all felt so laboured.
Final average speed was a paltry 24.3km/h.
The problem is mainly endurance. I am also about 10-15kg too heavy and my bike weighs 10.6kg. I also cycle with a backpack which weighs me down a bit and increases drag. Those are my excuses anyway but the main issue is endurance. I seem to die after about 90 mins.

Post work bike ride: 33.7 km in 81 minutes.
Getting some massive newbie gains on flat sections. Tried riding on the drops today for longer stretches. This is certainly starting to feel better and definitely allows me to get more glute into the pedalling stroke.
Anything remotely hilly, even for short periods, is still killing me. Legs just go to jelly. I'm sure there's a technique thing like gear selection that just needs to click.
