is this really true does it really work? ..... in a sense that it makes you fitter and stronger if you return to a 'normall level' and is it just cardio work or is it something that works for strength too?

As far as I know it is a widely accepted and proven fact within the science community. There is less oxygen in the air at altitude and your body compensates for this by producing more oxygen carrying red blood cells. I'm sure there are other effects too but that seems to be the most desirable and discussed.

Cant see how this having anywhere near as much of an effect on anaerobic exercise though seeing as a higher red blood count would start to be important after you have exerted rather than during. Although I'm sure this would still have some positive benefits.

The effects arnt permanent tho as far as im aware, good for short period but red blood celld return to normal as your body adapts to the normal atmosphere again

Yeah it does work BUT you need lots of time at altitude for it to have its full effect and as stated before once you return to "normal" altitudes the advantages don't last that long.

It does have a massive effect though. I've played rugby 7s in Nairobi a couple of times and the Kenyans are so far ahead of the european guys when it comes to performing at altitude. We were all hanging out our arses at half time and they were all still going strong. We only had 3 days to aclimatise though...

Isnt there a South American football team that hasnt lost at home for years because they play at such high altitude? Routinely beating Argentina, Brazil, Columbia etc.

We talked a lot about this in South Africa as it was 2000m above sea level where we competed. It did feel different . Brian Shaw lives in Colarado where he lives at very high altitude and I was asking opinions on whether he thought it helped him keep his cardio really good even though he has put on like 4 stone in the last year or so. The consensus was that it can't do harm, lol.

If you constantly train where the air is thinner then it will make a difference for sure!

The US Olympic team train at Colorado springs as this is quite high above sea level. So it obviously works for some!

Aye, Neil is correct

They are rarely beaten at home even though they are 51st in the FIFA rankings

O2 content is the same. Partial pressue is reduced though.

Most that use high alltitude use a mainly 'live high - train low' approach so quality of training is not impacted whilst still obtaining benifical physiological changes that occur at higher alltitudes.

Altitude makes a huge difference to rugby but not just fitness. Players are often able to kick the ball 15-20% further because the air is so much thinner. Can actualy have a big influence over the way teams play.

Is the main reason SA play no rugby at all in their own half, just ping the ball in the opposition half and play for territory
