Have you ever had jellied eel?

I had it at a pie and mash shop on Saturday for the first time in my life and it really is quite an interesting dish. A textbook example of diminishing marginal utility actually. The first bite was luxury to the highest regard but by the time I got to the last chunk I really had to force it down. In my lowly opinion, the eel its self is nice and the jelly is at first neither here now there, however after a short amount of time becomes very tedious and sickly.

The shop I went to was also interesting in its own right. As was the pie and mash for that matter.

For those of you who don't know, jellied eel looks something like this. I recon it's kind of the cockney version of tripe or something.

Does it actually have a texture like fish? It looks like it does from the picture.

I don't think it's anything like tripe. Tripe is the devils food. My gran got me to try it when I was about 9-years old. Just a smallish piece with some vinegar on it. God damn disgusting, it's almost making me heave just thinking about it!

The eel its self is like a pleasant white fish and the jelly is basically the water they boiled the eels in with a load of gelatine bunged in it.

I once had deep fried tripe in a posh and very weird restaurant and it was nice. Otherwise its pretty grim.

Can't get enough of it, but it's usually £2 something at Morrison's. I sometimes see it on special offer for something like 30p and buy a few trays. They go into the freezer and I take out about 5 a day for snacking on. Vinegar and black/white pepper are a must.

Don't need gelatine bunged in. Boiling the bones and allowing it to cool down releases enough gelatine to make the jelly, just like a boiled chicken will.

Never had jellied eel.
However, I got married in Poland.
One of the special rounds of food served in front of my wife and I, was a beast of a smoked eel.
I love sea food. LOVE it. But this. I dunno man. It wasn't what I expected. The bits of meat I did get were delicious but man, trying to get through the bones man... It isn't for me. Fish bones are my bane. No matter how soft, I just canny do it mate.

And to have unnecessary gelatin. Stab me in the eye with a rusty spoon.

Despite being a Lancastrian, I never ate tripe until thailand - it’s something my wife has made me as a pad krapow (spicy basil dish). not a big fan of it tbh (too rubbery)

One to try if you’re in the country is ‘gai teen’ aka chicken feet. not nicest to look at with the claws sticking out the sauce but the meat is very flavoursome.
