I found this post on another forum and thought it may be of interest here:

"I attended a seminar this weekend with Svend Karlsen. It was in a well equipped strongman gym, but he provided us with this program, partly because there were a few guys there who are trainers in commercial gyms, and partly because Svend started out in strongman without access to much equipment.

It's a seven week program, based on sets of four in the big lifts. Shoot for a 10kilo improvement at the end of the cycle. So you start with 7x4 of a too light weight, but add weight and drop a set each week.

Day one
Press: 7x4,6x4,5x4,4x4,x4,2x4,1x4
Karlsen flys: 4x12, 20 seconds rest
Incline press 4x4 add weight each week
Flys 4x8-12
Crossover 4x10-12
Press plate 3x8-12 (press a plate between your hands, and extend hands out in front)

Day two
Squat/front squat 7x4,6x4 etc
Karlsen squat 4x8-12
Stiff leg deadlift 4x8-12
Calf raise 4x20

Day three
Close grip bench press 7x4,6x4 etc
Push downs 4x8-12
Barbell curl 7x4,6x4 etc
Hammer curls 3x8-12

Day four
Deadlift 7x4,6x4 etc
Seated row 4x8-12
Shrugs 4x20

He suggested alternating between back and front squats
Barbell curls are power curls

Run this for seven weeks, then spend a week doing singles and testing maxes, then a deload week.
The deload week is light, set of 6-8 with a weight you can handle
Take a day off if you really need it. A day off means sleep in, eat, relax and enjoy the day. Go for a three to four hour walk in the woods.
Don't work to failure.
If something goes really wrong and you can't do the proscribed reps, repeat it the next week.

"It's very hard for a weight lifter to ever really be over trained. I know runners and cross country skiers who overtrain and are f**ked up for months or years, but you can't really do that with weights."

One question I asked him, was if you have very limited time to train, and have to cut to the bare minimum, what do you recommend?
He said train events."

Apparantly it's standing as you would for a front raise and then pressing a plate from your chest to arms length forward, so to the end position for a front raise.

What are the benefits Karlsen flys over normal lateral raises?

thats correct mate it causes you to squeeze your pecs together like you would on a pec dec whilst pressing forward as you do on a bench press , and he used them as carryover for events such as the front hold .

Everyone has different opinions on that. Personally I think it depends on the level of the lifter .

I agree, in the main. You can certanly be overeached easily enough and have a transient decrease in performance aka strength. However this will return pretty quickly.

One of the deffinitions of overtraining is a decrease in performance that is chronic in nature and does not return after a rest. Or words to that effect.

Off course I think when most people say overtrained they usally mean they aint gaining henchness fast enough Happy

Back to actual overtraining; I would assume taking drugs that improve recovery would help, plus lower levels of out of training stress and adequate nutrition.

It could also simply be how well conditioned you are to tye stress that you imposed and how carefully you have built that tolernace up.

Finally simple individual differences.
