Sounds like there are lots of flaws in that study not least the suggestion that drinking is always a social activity. There is nothing very social about drinking on your own in the house which is increasingly where a lot of people are doing their drinking due to the cost of alcohol in pubs.

My guess is that people who need to abstain from drinking probably have poor self-control and extreme personalities (all or nothing - cannot control moderate drinking etc). These traits in turn correlate with an unhappy life and poor health.

haha I was speaking from personal experience. Since I started powerlifting about a year ago, its been complete abstainence during most times and 3-4 massive binges (in excess of 10 pints a night). I'm sure this is very unhealthy but I just don't do social drinking. If I'm drinking I better be getting wasted.

I'm the same, I don't put poison in my body unless I'm getting absolutely written off and shagging some fat moose

in general i would say stress will kill you faster than beer and genes/life style play a part but i would think more than 8 pints a night and most people will suffer

Define 'stress' ? I feel really anxious when I dont drink so is drinking or not drinking better for me?

Hand on heart as a drinker anyone who suggests my addiction is actually good for my health is having a f**king laugh. I actually think the title of this thread is inaccurate . The studies I've seen quote 'moderate' drinking as having health benefits , I've never heard of studies even by Carlsberg or grain producers ( who are behind a lot of bulls**t studies) that try to prove hardend drinkers will outlive those who abstain.

i think that if you are drinking moderately enough so your liver can easily handle it then you should be okay,. if your drinking enough to damage your liver then its probably best to slow down.
sounds obvious but i think i will never stop drinking the fairly moderate amount i do now unless i am told my liver values are too high.

i meant drinking chills most people out so when my kids have been at it all day if i have a can or two and it relaxes me it is more good than bad. if you cant go ten minutes without drinking then yeah i would say its more bad for you

Just to clarify the 'having a f**king laugh' bit wasn't aimed at you mateHappy

I used to have a fairly high pressure job and I used to drink when I got home to chill out but it made me sleep poorly and I'd just wake up in the middle of the night and start stewing about the things I'd drank to forget aboutUnhappy

strange, i find beer has the opposite effect on me, if i got alot of s**t on my mind i cant sleep cos ill over think everything when i should be sleeping, a beer or two and ill sleep alot quicker and wake up feeling great!
proves were all different though, like some ppl just want to fight after a few where others just want to hug everyone. Tongue
