I was on SDF last night and I asked the guys what platform height they thought stones should be practiced with. The first person that offered advice was some guy called Terry. He practices his stones onto a 64" box. He reckons that if you can load a heavy stone to that height then you should be fine in a contest.

I'm going to try and load Jonny's light stone to 60" this weekend. I can't see myself loading it to 64" this weekend but that's gonna be a short term goal for me.

Obviously there aren't too many people who regard 105kg(?) as a heavy stone but I think it would be a good starting point based on Mr Hollands' advice.

Anyone on here got an opinion on a good platform height to train stones with?

Joni and I have been training to 54 inches which is pretty high. We've gone up to 63" in the past which is bordering on ridiculous. I wouldn't ever go below 48 inches except for absurdly heavy stones. I think it's best to mix it up.

When I pull my finger out and get my adjustable, multiple stone lading platform (pallets) it will be easy to train to various heights in the same session. I also need to get a tyre sorted ASAP.

You coming on Saturday then Pete?

BTW, I wish that it wasn't necessary to train to 60 inch plus platform heights but Terry mentioned that he's competed at shows where the height has been between 72 and 74 inches. I seem to remember Paul Amor(from SDF) mentioning that the opening height at this year's BSM northern qualifier was 70odd inches high!!!Crazy heights, I know, but it looks like that's the score.

Also, I thought that loading Mark Haydock's light stone to the 62 inch platform was crazy enough.

I thought that platform was 64"? Either way it was your first session with the stones, so you'll soon get used to it.

See you on Sat!

aye, high platforms, which i think are ridiculously unfair for short guys, are common in higher level comps, so it makes sense that terry recommends them.

But novice level comps or entry level opens dont have that kind of platforms.

i thought that one session we had to 63 inches as actually quite a laugh, so i dont mind having sessions to that height or even higher after jonny gets the pallet wall to the dungeon (with the current platform it can get dangerous because you can misload it under the platform).

This saturday the original plan is to train to 51 inches because thats the height at the unit 20 comp.
