I was about 22 years old in this video, so my brother would have been 12 when he knocked up this piece of wood 52mm thick to put plates on. Better than nothing and not a massively dissimilar movement.

Grip itself isn't really a factor on stones, you can't get any meaningful grip from your hands.
It's all about forearms and that crushing power. Having a big wingspan is handy too.

If you don't have access to stones then a sandbag makes a passable substitute, providing you pick it up like a stone, rather than actually gripping it like you do a sandbag.

I mostly agree with this. although I do think there is an indirect relationship between grip strength and 'stone grip strength'. in that forearm strength is correlated with hand strength. I have found that sometimes if I have taken my grip to the limit before doing stones that there is some impact on gripping the stones. not massive but noticeable.

the wingspan effect interests me. arm length and body proportions really impact your strengths and weaknesses on stones as stone diameter is a variable as well as weight. the lad I train with, for example, is 6'4 with long arms and loaded a 135 stone after only a few sessions. however, he finds my 80kg stone tough to rep with no tacky because his arms are so long he can only grip it with mostly his forearms. hes not that far off me on the 135 but nowhere near what I can do on the 80 because I can get contact from my whole arm on it to grip it. teaching him the technique that I use didnt work at all because we are polar opposites on the size scale.

I do think that digging your fingers into the stone helps a little bit, which is sort of related to grip strength.

There is an optimal diameter on stones - too small and you are forced to push your elbows together to grip, top wide and it is a real struggle to control.

Despite being not that strong, I did 135kg stone on my first try, at that weight, thanks to the joys of long arms. Having never gone above 110kg for a single before.
