I don’t have access to an atlas stone.

Just did a comp (write up in log) and found the pick part of the atlas stone really hard.

It was a 100kg stone and I managed to lap it once. The shouldering portion was easy. For comparison, can load a 115kg sandbag 4 or 5 times in a minute. I can also one-motion an 125kg sandbag to chest.

So what is my weakness likely to be? I don’t *think* it’s grip. Grip rarely seems a limiting factor for me. I can DOH a 220 deadlift, 145 DOH axel dead, 2 CoC gripper is easy etc. Not outstanding but relative to my overall strength I’d say grip is a forte.

I wonder if it could be chest? That lateral crush would seem to be a chest thing and I haven’t properly trained chest at all for many months.

Any other ideas? Cheers.

Pec dec

Get a natural stone from a riverbed, if you cannot get an atlas stone.

I was in Bejing early 2008 and found some lovely big rocks at a petrol station which I proceeded to have a mini session with.

everywhere I went I got pointed at being a
Wàiguó rén

Give them a reason to point other shorts and muscles! (I was more bench in 2008)

jt was a better stone lifter than me, but I'd say that the gripping/clamping strength comes more from the wrists/hands/arms/forearms, although a pec deck type movement is relevant. As jt said, practising with rocks would be the best approach. As with many strongman events, you can't beat training with the actual equipment or something closely resembling the equipment.

Your grip is strong by the way Happy

I'd say sandbag work is relevant too and I think your experience with that helped you from lap upwards.

Wayne, that was because I devoted 1 session a week to lifting them.

There is no better practice than the real thing but the pec dec etc is helpful if you aint got the real thing.

I concur. there is something quite unique about the way you have to grip an atlas stone so training with the real deal is by far the superior method.

never trained without so I cant comment with certainty but, as jt says, a pec dec or maybe even the right cable set up could work the right muscles. not sure how significant a carry over they would bring. worth a try in the absence of stones though.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I will add cable pec stuff (don’t have pec deck at my gym), continue to do grip and sandbags and start the hunt for some appropriate natural stones.

Sounds more like a technique issue, not strength.

Yeah, could well be. Also with a 60 second clock ticking down there was a fair amount of panic which tends to make technique even worse I guess.

Also Wayne calling my grip “strong” made my day lol.

From what I see in your journal you don't lack the overall strength to lap a 100kg stone, and your grip is stronger than mine ever was or will be. So that leaves technique Happy And obviously the ticking clock factor never helps.

I struggled to lap a 125 stone for a while. I've a long torso and short arms and legs. I found if I gripped the lower 1/3 of the stone far forward and kind of sat back I could leverage it up. My forearms and a lot of tacky did all the work holding as Wayne describes. I had 108kg stone by filling a yoga ball with concrete. It was oval, but worked fine fine for a home gym.

I’ve got really good leverages for stones I think. 196ish wingspan and long femurs (bad for pressing and squatting of course). So I don’t have that excuse! But I am looking into DIYing a stone. Yoga ball might be the approach!

I did the following:

Pec Deck - imagine you are holding an atlas stone, so your arms are round and bent at the elbows. Hold an isometric pause in this position for 20 seconds.

Loading Pin - Get bumper plates, stack them on a loading pin - we squeezed 5 20kg plates on - tip the stack over: and pick it up on the circumference edge (NOT the flat edge on the bottom)

Rock loads - raid the local garden centre/tundra/etc

Sand bag rows and lifts

Am now the proud owner of a DIY stone. Quite ugly but seems to work. I estimate it’s 80-90kg. Will do first session with it on Sat next.

Tempted to make a bigger one now. Quite enjoyed making it and know what went slightly wrong so could rectify. Might see how stone 1 holds up to training first.

Well done. You may want to wait a few weeks before dropping. The concrete needs to cure. 5 weeks covered in plastic seems to be the usual.
