I've been thinking a bit about my training recently, and I think because I keep telling myself in my head to stick to some form of regimented regime, I always try to make each session "the first one of the new routine", which is leading me to pushing it too hard each session.

I think instead I need to accept that I dislike set routines, and also that I'll be in the gym as often as I possibly can, and adapt my lifting to that, really by doing whatever lifts I feel like on a given day, and keeping things snappy.

I think my personal favourite rep ranges are below 3 reps on pulls and squats, and up to 5 reps on pushing movements. I'll try to stick roughly to those guidelines I guess.

I really need to clean my diet up as well.

Finished uni forever today. Got a call from work asking me to start a month early, giving me a week holiday between finishing university and starting full time work.

I'm not quite sure what's happening in the gym at the moment. I keep going heavy and failing PB's because I'm too fried, but my mentality in the gym prevents me going light.

I tell myself I need a routine to make progress, but I hate routines. I enjoy going to the gym and just doing whatever I feel like that day, but I guess that's not conducive to progress. I hate leaving something in the gym. I just want to push myself every time I go.

If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears.

hey, i used to be the same as yourself each time i went in the gym, training to failure and leaving nothing. then i started getting injured and burning out. now i stick to the prescribed minimum reps till my final week where i go all out. it has helped tremendously! stregth keeps going up and no injuries to report and i really look forward to the sessions i max out now even more.

as frustrating as it is, be patient.

Unfortunately aiming to hit weekly PBs will lead to injury and burnout. Programs which are more sensible, will lead to ultimate GAINS. We all learn the hard way Unhappy

I got on well with the Ed Coan deadlift routine, which makes you lift moderately heavy week in week out.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Just posting this here for future reference for myself. A vague plan is starting to form in my head.

Done some thinking over the last couple of days, I think I've been hammering low reps for a while, and need a little more volume to lay done more of a base so that I can spend the second half of the year making serious gainz!! Short term targets are now:

Squat
6x6 @ 140kg
5x3 @ 165kg

Bench
6x6 @ 100kg
5x3 @ 110kg

Push Press
6x6 @ 100kg
5x3 @ 110kg

Deadlift
6x6 @ 190kg
1x3 @ 220kg

I reckon if I can hit those within the next two months, I'll be in with a solid run at hitting 200/130/250 this year which would make me very happy.

Great session. Deadlifts fast and snappy. Some random dude watching commented that the only one that looked remotely difficult was the last rep of 6 with 190kg.

BW around 90kg today.
