How do you know when you’re ready to compete in strongman? I’m looking at a bunch of novice/non-novice comps but I don’t want to turn up only to come last at everything or no rep everything.

I think a big problem is that I’ve never had a go on any implements, so I only have my gym numbers to go by. These are currently around;

Squat: 180kg
Deadlift: 235kg
Push Press: 115kg
Strict Press: 90kg
I’ve also push pressed a 60kg dumbbell before

At around 85kg bw. I’m looking at a comp in about a month and a half, u90kg class, with the following events:

EVENT 1
-Max trap bar deadlift (5 total attempts, start weight mandatory) – Start weight 200kg.
EVENT 2
-Farmers walk 20m – 110kg each hand
EVENT 3
-Yoke 20m – 300kg
EVENT 4
-Seated rope pull 10m into sled drag 10m – 250kg
EVENT 5
-Lift & load medley: axle overhead – 90kg; t-handle load – 140kg; keg overhead – 80kg; sandbag load – 100kg; kettlebell overhead – 48kg; dumbbell load – 90kg
EVENT 6
-Harness and rope pull 20 metres – 7.5 tonne lorry

Does it look like I’ll stand a chance of scoring any points? Is it even worth entering or should I train for a few more months first lol?

Thanks guys. I think I will, just to get some competition experience, although I'll probably be the only guy there who's never tried any of the implements or events before!

You'll be fine, even without events training. If you can't get your hands on specific implements, educate yourself on the interwebs and at least you'll have an idea of what you should be trying to accomplish in terms of technique/strategy, even if it's your first time trying.

Before my first comp I had one go at farmers, one go at log, never done arm over arm, never done sandbag carry, never done duckwalk.

Good man.

I'd try to get one events session in after your exams to try a few of them, but after that just relax. After all, I don't expect many people in a novice comp will have practiced truck pulling Happy
