the sport needs to be for the lifters, not some boring old fart in the audience that doesnt like the lifters choice of music

If you want to see the sport evolve, you're going to have to re-think that.

the sport doesnt need to evolve, it needs to get consistant
i'm not concerned with the olympics and doubt that powerlifting will ever make it

maybe not the olympics, but wouldn't it be nice to have bigger audiences at comps (not just friends and relatives of lifters) and for the average person on the street to actually know what powerlifting is?? It should be possible to elevate the sport to a point where a town hall is too small for the national championships surely!
I'm not against heavy metal being used personally but I can see how it would be off-putting to members of the audience. Thing is, if the popularity of the sport grows substantially then the atmosphere provided by the crowd should be enough I think. If you need that extra boost then just stick some headphones in before you lift. Lots of other sports and athletes seem to manage this way (although I guess there aren't many that are similar to PLing).

I just lol'd thinking about Miley Cyrus playing during Tom Martin's 350kg deadlift record.
See, you don't need heavy metal!!!
