Something I've been wondering about on and off now for a while. I use climbers chalk and an opposing grip on my deadlifts. I find it more comfortable to have the right hand undergrip and the left hand overgrip. Is there a reason I should try to alternate this? If I always do it one way will I bring on some long term imbalance/injury from this?

I use left hand under and have never attempted to change it about, I dont think any imbalance will occur*

Same as Boar on this one. Always the same over/under combination. Hasn't resulted in any hideous abnormalities.

i have read about some osteopath or chiro saying that he can always see which way around the patient holds his grip on deadlifts by just looking at their back.

So when i started deadlifting i used the grips both way around for balance purposes and grip strength training purposes. However, i noticed that my dicky back gave in more often with the grip one way compared to the other way, so i decided to just stick to my prefered way of gripping the bar and just ignore the imbalance possibility.

Righto thanks. I'll just carry on business as usual then, and try to steer clear of any Osteopaths along the way.

PMSL
I already have the hideous abnormalities, so not point in alternating my grip Tongue

This dosn't surprise me, but it would feel very strange to alter my grip nowdays! I think as long as you do plenty of upper back work any imbalances won't be fatal Tongue

I alternate grip on every set, except for when I forget. I try to arrange it so the hardest set of the day will be pulled left-under. Sometimes I get confused and start a pull double-underhand. That's usually a signal I need more sleep.

Brad Gillingham obviously lost sleep about any possible inbalance of his back with the alternate grip so he deadlifts with palms back using the "hook grip". Amazingly he manages to keep hold of 370-380kg in competition.
I would agree with the others that if you do your regular back work with a normal grip any inbalance will be negligable. I think one of the best things you can do for grip strength is get rid of straps if you use them and just use chalk.

Thanks for the replies. I'm a beginner so I don't even know how to use straps, all I use is chalk. I do put in some back work - e.g. pull ups and BB rows, so I guess I'll not lose any sleep over it.

joni has a great point if you just do the same grip all the time i can through you off i.e. you need to be balance in PL comps and strongman so use the alternate grip but rotate them

Yea going with the general view here that it makes no difference. Although i use double overhand on my SLDL and an alternate on the big boy version. Find that this helps with my grip also.

I used under for my left and over for the right (even though im a lefty weird...).

I worried about it at first but then i thought its probably bulls**t.

I use chalk and straps for deadlifts in training now, it seems a shame to not work your back to the max just because your grip fails. but I also do double overhand with a hook grip now and again just to spice things up.
