How do you ease back into training after having a virus? What's the best way to go about it? I think it's easy to overdo it without realising until it's too late, so i'm planning to start with some really light sessions (mostly formwork stuff) this week. What's the best way to tell when you are doing too much too soon? Or should I stop being a wimp and just get back to it ASAP?

Confused

Yea, stop being a wimp, unless you've been seriously ill (i.e. not a bad cold or a touch of the flu).

I'm sure Rick will tell you different though Wink

I think you should always start off lighter than you would normally - if you try and jump straight back into weights that you were lifting before you were ill you'll just take longer to get back to where you were.

Heavy singles is fine, but "heavy" is relative - you definitely shouldn't expect them to be as heavy as pre-illness.

just in case, it was a joke Wink

depending how ill you have been. I have had both kinds: once had a light flu, and came back stronger than i left. The latest though took about 3 weeks to get back from and i am not still as strong as i was before getting ill couple months back!

I pulled a PB the other week after being ill for 5 or so days. I think Olly/Rob were talking about some guy saying you should try for a PB after illness or something...

Guess it could be the huge amount of recuperation time sat on your ass when you are sick. I could see the point if you get enough calories in (which is, unfortunately, not the case for me right now - I have been really really struggling to eat)

Still - back to deadlift tommorow and i've decided to just go in and see how it feels. If 80 kg feels hard, then that's where i'll be stopping. But if 105 kg feels ok, i'll just do the volume as best I can Happy

It's Bill Starr who wrote about going into the gym, picking an exerices you havent done for a while and trying to PB on it. I like that advice, and I think that if you can train through an illness, you should. Limbering up, breaking sweat, concentrating on something, hell, even just getting out of bed make me feel a f**k load better when im ill.

Of course this isnt always practical. But, if I can train, I will.
