When a spider constructs a web to fit its current surroundings (which is obviously variable) is any form of thought or decision making going on, or is the spider just following an in-built algorithm? Would 2 spiders in identical situations construct identical webs?

No, they dont have brains, but they might just about have a small ganglia of neurons but a lot less than insects...insects, they do not have brains... just a cluster of neurons toward the head (ganglia not quiet a brain)

Also, I think I remember the critter subject of this thread...only discoverd recently...part of the spider family and wait for it...they live on human eyelashes

Sorry, I was thinking of Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis, both frequently referred to as eyelash mites...:Roll-Eyes

Fascinating stuff.

I think of colonies of ants as maybe having a collective consciousness of some sort.
