I have decided to chronicle my transition back into a 100% Paleo way of eating and to try and ascertain whether this type of diet has any impact on my strength training goals, be that positive or negative.

For those that don't know, from around May until early June I was 100% Paleo. I chose the Paleo WOE because I had significant digestive issues which I had to resolve (Not to mention a fair amount of fat which needed to be removed).

In short, the Paleo diet resolved all of my digestive problems and also took me from a soft 94kg to a very lean 81.6kg, which was the lowest recorded weight I had and was taken at the weigh in of the BDFPA North West Divisional.
At that comp, I squatted 170kg (Failed 180kg), Benched 117.5kg (Was good for more) and Deadlifted 202.5kg (Failed 212.5kg)

After the competition, I decided to take a couple of weeks off my diet and have a blow out. 8 weeks later and a weight gain of 16kg I am now at my heaviest weight ever and feeling the most unhealthy I have ever felt in my life. The 2 week blow out became a massive fall off the wagon which I feel has destroyed my health a little bit. I hope to put that right.

Interestingly, in those weeks of ridiculously 'dirty' eating, I have had some spectacular gains in strength. The huge fall off the wagon coincided with me starting PT sessions with Tom Martin.
As of today, I have squatted 200kg (Good for more), Benched 140kg (Good for more) and Deadlifted 232.5kg. These are obviously massive increases in strength in just 8 weeks.

What I hope to achieve from this WOE is:

*To lose weight
*To continue to increase strength
*To give others who are considering losing weight the confidence to do so without having to worry about sacrificing strength.

I hope you find this a decent read. If you don't, don't come back. See ya Happy

A few minor details:

* I will be weight training fasted 3 times a week.
* For the first 3 weeks I will be Zero carb.
* I will be using an intermittent fasting protocol.
* I will try to walk for 30 minutes, 4 times a week.

My future priorities:
Health
Strength
Cardio Fitness

Think that's it....

Great stuff. Looking forward to seeing if you can gain strength John. I've lost strength, and although not actually paleo, my diet is 'along those lines'
Hopefully you'll add strength, my strength loss may just be me training a bit differently due to a few injuries, and the fact that I was (until today) training fasted for the last 3 months or so.

edit: just noticed that you will be IF and training fasted too. Lets see what happens. Happy

good luck!

But dont place too much emphasis on the keep gaining strength if you intend to go 3 weeks zero carbs!

You've gained awesome strength last 2 months, if you keep half you'll be better than you were before!

I'd be very surprised if you can continue to gain strength and cut the fat away, but good luck! 16kg in 8 weeks- that's some eating!

Should be a good read John-boy. Do you plan to be 100% strict with the Paleo, no curries or anything???

Thanks everybody for your input. A bit concerning to read about those who have already tried this and failed to gain or maintain strength. Lol.

In a nut shell - Meat, Fish, Poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds, fruit, veg. Loads of black coffee Grin

That's a good point actually, but I don't intend to get back down to 82.5kg. I reckon I will level out around 85kg, which I know is a powerlifting 'No Mans Land', but im not too worried about that.

I still think I can gain strength because, well frankly, I'm still not very strong at all yet.

Cheers Tony.
Nope...Strict as f**k until maybe Christmas week.
I was 100% strict for around 3 months last time with no issues.

85kg I think Nick. No timescale. No rush. Slow and steady wins the race. Happy

Why are you low carbing?

It seems you are combining a lot of pretty challenging eating (or lack of) practices without the "leeway/easy" part of each.

Paleo would not have food timing restrictions, also would not be zero carb. You can have some fruits and even honey. But some vegetables and peanuts would be out.

You could also easily make a paleo curry. I can give you a recipe if you want.

John, you can be a healthy 90kg at 5'10 no probs. It's also easier to maintain than 85.

I'm 91-92kg at 5'11 and generally feel healthy.

I have done it before and it works really well for me. I won't find it that big a challenge.

Why the low carb? Well initially, I want some quick weight loss. Most of that weight will be water, but at least I wont be carrying it with me.
The zero carb approach and IF protocol makes it a much simpler transition as far as I'm concerned as I only have to think about eating meat 3 times a day. What could be easier?

Even eating masses of veg and fruit, Paleo is low carb. Not much I can do about that.

Thanks for the offer of the recipe, but I won't use it. Cooking and preparing isn't for me.
