Saturday 24th Jan:

Ultra wide box squats (parallel): ...2@80/90 6x2@100
Ultra wide box squats (2" high): 1@120/130/140/150
Chins: 8x5

All the squats were very easy today and done for speed. I've got chest pains again now, and also pain up the left hand side of my neck. I can't decide if I'm being a hypochondriac or not.

Monday 26th Jan 08:

Moved my grip in 1/2" and was a lot stronger for it.

Bench:...3@100/110/115 1@120 3x3@110
Ultra-wide grip bench: 8@80/90 6@100
Incline db press: 12/12/16/14@30
Side shoulder raises: 3x13

Was going for 2@120 and missed the second rep. A bit stupid to be going to failure for the second week in a row, but the triples at 110 afterwards all felt easy, so pleased with that.

Wednesday 28th Jan:

My back is buggered. I was hoping that I could take a "light week" and it would heal up, but I stupidly tried some jerks today and even the set at 70kg hurt. Of course, I ignored this and went heavy anyway. I'm now a bench only lifter for the next few months at least. I'm not going to do anything that causes even the slightest discomfort in my back, and hope that I can find enough stupid accessory exercises to stop my legs and back atrophying completely. I'm hoping that in a couple of weeks I'll be able to do light front squats and maybe start doing pulls again, but I'm not going to push it or do anything that hurts.

Front squats: 3@50/70/90/100
Jerks: 3@70 1@90 3x1@100 1@105/110/115 F@120
Natural GHR: 5x5 (mainly just falling fowards with someone holding my ankles!)
Pendlay rows: 8@60 4x8@80
Crunches: 3x20

10kg pb on jerks, and I'd have got 120kg too if my head was right. First time I've done jerks in years, and probably about the 5th time ever. But as I said above, my back is screwed. It seems I never last more than 3 months without my back stopping me training again. My form's good, and I haven't gone crazy with the weights this time either. I might have to admit that I'm never going to be able to do full meets and put all my energy into making my bench less crap instead. I might try and get good at chin-ups as well... so that I can make up for having no legs by having a huge back!

Thursday 29th January:

My "close grip" is now so wide and my normal grip so narrow that there's only an inch between them. Never mind.

Close grip bench: ...3@80/100/110/115 4x3@110 15@80
DB shoulder press: 8@24/26 7/8@28
Curls: lots

New 3 rep max on close grip.

Cheers. Yeah, dodgy backs are annoying as hell!

Monday 2nd Feb:

Now my back's too knackered to squat or deadlift, my bench is finally starting to improve! Not sure the big arching is good for my back... might have to start doing lots of stretching before and after bench.

Paused 2 board: ...3@100/110/120/125 3x3@120
Ultra-wide grip bench: 10/8/8@100
Chins: 5x5

Stupidly light weights on deads and squats. No back pains, so I'll up the weight a little next week if my back still feels alright tomorrow morning.

Sumo deads: ...10x10@80
Front squats: ...10x6@60
Pendlay rows: 6@60/80 4x6@85
Leg raises: 4x10

Decline bench: ...5@80/100 6@110 3x5@110 8@100
Seated press: 5@40/60/70 4@75 5@70
Curls: 3x8

Reasonable session, nothing exciting. Felt ok.

Saturday 7th Feb:

I was only going to use 60kg on box squats today, but being an idiot I went heavier. All the sets were very fast, and nothing hurt during the session though, so hopefully it'll be fine.

Ultra-wide stance box squats:
-parallel: ...3@80/90 3x3@100
-IPA depth: 3@120/130/140
Strap pulldowns: 3x10 2x6
Pendlay rows: 3x8
Natural GHR: 4x5
Straight-leg sit-ups: 12@0/10/10 50@0

My abs are going to be sore tomorrow!

Monday 9th Feb:

2 block bench: ...3@100/110/120/130 1@135 3@125 5@120
Ultra-wide grip bench: 5@100 4@110 12@90
Chins: 5x5
Leg raises: 4x10

Pleased with the weights I got from the blocks today, but was wrecked when I tried the ultra wide grip stuff. I've never really done board press before a couple of weeks ago, so I guess those are new 1, 3 and 5 rep maxes. My new (first) shirt should be arriving within a fortnight, so I think I'll take it easy next week and then play around in the shirt the week after that.

Wednesday 11th Feb:

Sumo deads (double overhand): 5@60/100/120/140/160/170/170/170/160
Front squats: 6@60 6x6@80
Straight leg sit-ups: 10@0/10 5x10@15

My stupid rationalisation for going heavier than I should have on deads was that if I could pull it double overhand then there's no way it could hurt my back. My back doesn't feel 100%, but it's not too bad either. I'm not training on Saturday, so hopefully it'll be fine.

My bench shirt has arrived, and I'm keen to try it out on Monday.

Curls: 3x10

Went a bit heavier on box squats today. No back pain, but it feels a bit "off" somehow. I'll have a hot shower and do lots of stretching in a bit and see how it feels tomorrow.

Monday 16th February.

First ever session in a shirt! Touching boards was really easy, but I was advised against going for full range reps in my first session. Reckon I might do 150kg off my chest next week though.

Bench:
...
1@90
1@100

2 block:
1@110
1@120

Shirt on then:

2 block:
1@130
1@140
1@150
F@160 (threw the bar back towards my face. Think I would have got it with better technique)

1 block:
1@150
1@150
1@150

The singles at 150kg were progressively easier. The last one was very fast and felt easy.

Shirt off then:

Bench:
9@100
8@100

Chins:
5
5
5
5

I'm pretty confident that I could get 155kg off my chest with a bit of practise. I should probably have got a slightly tighter shirt (I can put this one on myself), but this one was cheap (second hand) and if I get 30kg out of bit with only a couple of weeks' practice that'll be pretty good.

Really pissed off. The 5s at 170kg on deadlifts last week felt absolutely fine. Went back to mixed grip this week and tried 180. My back was having none of it.

Front squats: ...3x5@90
Sumo deads: ...2x5@180 1/1@170
