Sunday 21st December:

I accidentally slept for 12 1/2 hours last night and so had to rush to the gym to get there before it closed. I also took a lot of caffeine. After about 15 mins my heartrate was about 150 between sets, I was constantly short of breath and I still feel like I might pass out. All a bit alarming! I cut the workout short, but still probably carried on for many sets more than I should have.

Bench: ...5x3@100 5@100
Cheat rows: ...8@120/140/150/150
Pendlay rows: 8@60/70/70/70

Tuesday 23rd December:

I've been coughing non-stop for a couple of days now, and my throat's really flemmy but I don't feel too ill. Was going to do easy sets of 5 today but accidentally did heavy triples. All the squats sets felt easy, which I was very pleased with (3@180kg felt hard a month ago, but I could definitely have gotten at least 5 reps today), but my back was hurting a little. The lighter weight box squats and wide stance squats seem to have helped my narrow stance strength. The deadlifts still felt far too hard though.

Squats: ...3@100/120/140 3@160/170/180(w)
Sumo deads: 3@60/100/140 3x5@160
Weighted sit-ups: 4x10

Saturday 27th December:

Bench: ...(5@100 3@105 1@110)x3
Overhead press: 3@60/80/90/95 6@80
Press-ups: 15/13/11
Abs

No spotter on bench, so didn't push it too hard. Reckon I'd have got a little bit more with a lift off, but I'm still pissed about my bench being crap. Quite liked the 5/3/1 thing I did today though as it means I get some volume in but also a bit of practise with weights fairly close to my max.

Tuesday 30th December:

After deadlifting so little in the last couple of weeks I thought I'd try deadlifting first today and see how that went. I think I might stick with it this way round. I was able to deadlift what I thought I should be able to do (which is still not much, but I'll get there eventually if I don't cripple myself straight away again) and my squats didn't seem to suffer from it at all. I had no back pain on anything on the way up, but my last light set of squats hurt. I've gotta be careful with these and not get carried away like I usually do.

Sumo deads: ...3@180 3/2@200 3@180
Squats: ...5@140 5@160(w) 6@180(w) 5@140
Weighed sit-ups
15 mins of fat man cardio

Quite low volume overall, but the top sets on squats and deads were rep pbs since I've restarted, so still a decent session overall. I could have got 8 reps at 180 on the squats I think, but I didn't want to go nuts and lift with crappy form. I've used tight wraps for the last two weeks now, so next week I'll have to be disciplined and either use light wraps or no wraps.

Friday 2nd January:

Bench:...3@100/105/110 2@112.5 3@105 2@110 5@100
Overhead press:...3@80/90/90/95
Press-ups: 10@0 3x10@20

Good session today. Decent volume with heavy weights (for me), but not going to failure on anything. Hopefully if I keep training bench sensibly it'll start to get less crap soon.

Monday 5th January:

Sumo deads:...1@140/180/200/210/220 3x5@180
Pendlay rows: 6@60/80 3x6@90
Weighted sit-ups: 4x8

Hit a sumo pb today. Still 15kg behind my all time deadlift pb, but it's encouraging that after a mere four years I should be able to break that soon! Next time I do singles I'll pull at least 500lbs.

I'm going to keep today's session in mind as an example of the fact that I should be expending most of my effort on the main lifts, rather than having lots of energy left to tart about doing loads of accessory stuff. I did all the deadlifts in 25 minutes and was wrecked afterwards.

Im begining to think the sumo deads hurt my back more than a conv - mabie there is a 'tipping' point when all pressure is put on the lowerback ,moreso than conv ?

i love sumo too !!

very nice pulling mate !!

Cheers mate. I think we were about the same in terms of deadlifts a few years back. Then I injured myself and you continued to improve!

I guess it's different for everyone, but in my case conventional f**ks my back much much much more than sumo. Every time I've tried doing conventional deadlifts over the last few years, I've had to quit very quickly due to back pains. I tried speed pulls at 110 about a month ago and even those felt bad. However, I've been consistently doing heavy sumo pulls for two months now (maybe even a bit longer... can't remember exactly) with no problems at all.

I've been keeping an eye on your training for a bit... you're mental! Looks fun though, and a 200 pull at 75 (?) shows you're clearly still strong with all your newfound fitness.

Thursday 8th Jan:

Squats: ...1@160/180/200/210/170
Front squats: ...3@90 5x3@110
Weighted sit-ups: 6@0/15/25/35/45

New pb on squats! I'd gotten used to squatting with a mirror over the holidays and so nearly fell over (all my weight went onto my right leg and I was really really wonky) on my top set, but it still came up fairly smoothly. I'm definitely still good for a bit more when I sort out not falling over! Was going to do 3x3@170 with loose wraps afterwards, but my back didn't feel too happy so left it there. Next week is either a deload or lots of sets of easy 5s, depending on how I feel. Building back up to heavy weights over a month.

Cheers mate! I'm hoping for a lot more on the deadlift in the next few months. Just gotta keep repeating the boring mantra of "don't get injured, don't get injured...".

f**kin nice squat my man !!!

I seem to have aquired a sprain in my lower back ,so ive made a decision - no deadlifting this year , i think the 200 at chrimbo must have aggrivated the old 'injury' i got at the british 2007 , so its obviously a weak spot , goddat sort it oot !!

heavy squatting is such hard 'big balls required' work , no wonder not many do it (includin me !!)
