See technical rules page at http://www.powerlifting-ipf.com/

and

Examples of Bench Press PDF

for examples of acceptable on unacceptable buttock/feet placement. (This is clarification rather than a new rule.)

Most controversial new rule must be introduction of "Press" command. So now you have "Start" before you lower the bar, "Press" when it's motionless on the chest and then "Rack" when it's pressed out. Personally I think it would have been better if referees could just give reds for presses that clearly aren't paused, but that seems to be too difficult, so we get the press command to make it simpler.

Head also has to not move during lift which apparently is very difficult for some equipped lifters (not that many of us have to care about that).

What does everyone else think?

I think it's getting too stringent. What difference does it make if you move your head? It's not going to add 10k to your bench... some people prefer to watch the bar closely and there's nothing wrong with that.

As for the press command, hopefully it will at least result in a bit of consistency (though this depends on the consistency of the judge's shouting the command obviously) but I would imagine it will make it close to impossible to get away with true max benches which you could pause only ever so briefly.

shouting the press command sounds s**t. It still boils down to the judges judgement if they pass you or fail you if you press before the command. Thats what happened at the drug free fed comps anyway, some started pressing before the command and got three whites.

I agree - like that contest Wildboar was in recently. WPC I think - they have a press command but all that happens is that people bench touch and go, but the ref shouts "press" just as they press it.

That one is definitely paused - I have no doubt that would have (or at least should have!) passed in the IPF.

It's a bit annoying cos I've got my bench form down pretty well so that I pause as much as is needed to pass - I think I'll definitely need to pause for longer when there's a press command.

I don't really mind within reason what the rules are as long as they're enforced properly - neither too harsh nor too lenient. When does the new regime, with still heads and pause command, start? January 1?

Shirted lifters are surely going to be in the s**t with the head on bench rule.

do they lift their head to enable them to see the bar touch the chest or does the shirt force the head up ??

I believe the first is definitely the case; the second possibly but I'm not sure.

You dont need to lift the head to see it touch because of the shirt, thats more because of how low these guys bring the bar these days. But there are clear rules about this in the IPF too.

I think the 'press' command is an absolute pile of s**t. I cant hear for s**t when Im under a max attempt. Also, does this mean that we expect the crowd to be silent so that we can listen out for the command. Because thats a good way to encourage people to come watch a new sport. Either way, BULLs**t!

Got to agree on the press command - totally impractical and just switching the judging doubt on to a different issue.

I remember one equipped lifter (can't remember who it was) saying that he didn't actually feel the bar touch when he was shirted (don't know why) and that was why he had to raise his head on the descent. Never done any shirted benching so I couldn't say.
