This is basically the same as in doc film making. Had to get people to sign forms but in reality they had little legal standing.

This sheds more light on the matter...

Hi Derek,

I’d like to take the time to reply to your recent post regarding your decision to pull out of the Master’s World’s Strongest Man Championship 2013. Your statement is untrue and I would like to address this in my reply. First let me clarify that Simon Flint’s left knee blew out as he was lifting the car, it came down on his right knee before he fell back clear of the car. This was not the cause of equipment failure and such an injury could easily have happened when he was lifting the husafell stone, atlas stone or even in the gym!

You state that there were no spotters for the event – this is untrue, there were spotters in place and I myself was spotting Simon Flint when the injury occurred and I was the first to reach him. He was clear of the car so there was very little I could do only call for paramedics and an ambulance.

You state “When I asked why there were no spotters I was told the TV production thought it would not look good for spotters to be there”. This is also incorrect as already explained and the TV production only asked for the spotters to be moved to the side out of shot but they were still in place.

You state that there were no paramedics on site. As explained they were called away to attend to a plane crash that happened just before the accident happen during the competition. They were first aiders there on site to attend to Simon Immediately and the paramedics arrived on site within a couple of minutes to treat Simon.

You state “I draw the line when the Event Promoter puts TV before athlete safety”. I can assure you that athlete safety is Glenn Ross’s number one priority and he looks at events from an athlete’s point of view first and foremost being a competitor himself. Yes the TV production does make requests but these requests do not prioritise over athletes safety!

You state you “pulled out of a very badly organized competition”. You competed at this event last year and you were full of praise of how the competition was run! If it was such a “badly organized competition” why did you return this year? This year’s competition was run even better than last years! We had three competitions with 27 tests of strength and 36 athletes from all around the world.

To give you an example of just how “badly organised” we were ill use a perfect example – you! We flew you in several days early at your request to allow you to acclimatise to our weather, we paid for your flights, food and hotel for the duration of your stay and we also taxied you around to see Belfast so you could do some shopping, go to the cinema etc. We had so many requests from you I honestly thought we had Lady Gaga over to do the masters instead of Derek Boyer.
Your status update was so selective in leaving out many details about the circumstances regarding your decision to pull out from the competition and this was done deliberately by yourself so that you would look good and stand on the moral high ground. This is backed up by your decision to delete any posts from other competitors who disagree with your status. Let me address this in full and not leave out the many details you ignored in your status update.

You arrived in Belfast and it was clear to see you were not in the physical condition you were last year. This was noted by other competitors and the event organisers! Before any incident happened with the car roll you wanted to withdraw from the competition! It took great effort from Odd Haugen and Magnus Ver Magnusson to convince you not to pull out! So apart from being not physically prepared it was obvious that your mental preparation was not there also. This year’s line-up was much stronger than last years and it was clear that you would be battling not only to retain your title but also for a place on the podium.

The decision to have the car roll as the first event was in your favour as this is one of your best events. You only seemed unhappy about the event when you realised so many competitors had beaten your time it was becoming clear that the standard of the top three guys was better than your own even in your best event! When the accident happened in the last pairing it offered you the perfect excuse to pull out of the competition with the focus being taken off yourself!

Your behaviour after your decision to withdraw was nothing short of disgusting; your confrontation with Yvonne Ross (Glenn’s wife) left not only her in tears but also their very young daughter. Your confrontation with Glenn was much more subdued and less aggressive! While you later apologized for your behaviour I think it is fair to say that is completely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.
Had your statement about the many faults with safety, spotters and organisation been true you would have found many others pull out alongside you in protest about it but this was not the case as everyone else who was there understood that this was simply a tragic accident and could have happened anywhere. You pulled out for personal reasons and to use another man’s injury as an excuse is bad enough but to try and publicly discredit a professionally run competition and organisation is even worse and says more about you than it does about the competition and its organisers.

I will post this on your wall Derek which I will ask you to leave up so that people can judge fairly after hearing the full story of the events that surround your decision to withdraw from the competition. I can only assume you will delete it like you have deleted the many posts from others who were at the competition who disagree with your version of events.

Yours in strength

You'd expect more maturity from someone in a masters category.
