Got a foam roller in the post today. Quite effective at extracting tension from my back, as well as liberating a few clicks.

Anyway, short but fairly intense session today. Actually doing pretty much the same lifts as my brother, which was nice, albeit, he's deadlifting more than me still as his back isn't in rehab.

(leg rehab stretches, though none of the exercises)

Deadlift:

8x20kg
8x70kg
5x100kg
5x130kg
1x160kg - heaviest I've been so far. Not hard
3x5x130kg - first set only with rehband

Lunges:

10xbw each leg
10x10kg DB each hand, each leg
2x10x15kg barbell on back, each leg

More stretching and I feel good.

Looks like you are gaining strength very quickly. It’s interesting to follow your progress and to see how far you can go.

Are you still vegan?

Thanks Millsy.

Not vegan anymore, no. Haven't been for 9 years now. I started working in forestry about 11 years ago and I couldn't reconcile the fact that I was vegan with the need for control of squirrels and deer in the environment that I worked. You cannot establish broadleaf woodland in the UK without extensive control of grey squirrels.

Since then, I've settled into a pretty standard omnivorous diet. The large weight loss that I had in 2008 was mainly due to anxiety relating to my diet. I'd gained so much weight, so quickly that maintaining it was very difficult. I'd get incredibly stressed about eating enough, whether I'd be able to find food when I was out and about, what it was going to taste like (the death shakes Brian and I used to drink were vile). I ended up with an incredibly delicate stomach, and I was prone to being sick, especially if those awful protein shakes were involved.

I lost 19kg in 3 months in 2008, which was quite distressing, but my stomach issues started to improve after I stopped trying to force-feed myself. I ended up settling at a bodyweight of 101-105kg for years and years, which is horribly skinny for someone my height.

I started forestry in 2009 and regained the ability to eat well, but I didn't force it because I was only eating to support my work. After a couple of years of forestry, I had the aforementioned epiphany and ceased to be vegan.

It has been so so much easier for me to gain weight this time around. I don't have to force feed myself, the shakes taste genuinely pleasant and I'm still 16kg up on 4 months ago.

It is not that I think that the vegan diet is in any way deficient, far from it. There are far too many top level athletes who are vegan for that to be the case. It's just that for me, I found it incredibly stressful to be vegan and eat for weightlifting and weight gaining. My metabolism was a bit faster then, and I wouldn't gain weight unless I was eating 5500kcal or more every day. Now I see the same weight gain on about 800-1000kcal less.

I would defend anybody's veganism to the hilt. It is still (for me) the most ethical way to live, but for me, it wrecked my stomach and ruined aspects of my life. I'm just a hypocrite now, in all honesty, but a happy one!

As regards strength gains, it's so hard holding back but I have to. My connective tissue is why I need to take my time (patella tendons being an example of how easy it is for me to overdo it). I've always been injury prone, and going from doing nothing to heavy lifting in a short period of time is fraught with risk. The muscle memory is there for the lifts, the muscle growth is much quicker this time around as I'm only regaining lost bulk, but the tendons are properly deconditioned and take much longer to adapt.

Either way, I'm really enjoying it and I think it'll only go on to improve over winter as I'm no fan of the heat and find it much easier to train when it's cold.

Thanks for continuing to take an interest in the log - I write it so that I can keep track of things (it's been fascinating to look back through the old logs on Veganfitness) but the banter is what makes it Grin

Solo session today as my brother wanted to try a local strongman/spit and sawdust gym. I popped along to see it, and it is indeed excellent, but not as conveniently located as the one at the bottom of my garden.

(knee rehab stretches and TKDs)

Push press:

10x15kg (I'm quite enjoying the new ladies olympic bar we have - best bar we have)
6x35kg
5x55kg
2x75kg
2x1x85kg - I wasn't happy with the bar line on the first rep so did it again.
fx95kg - hahahaha! Flew up, for some reason forgot to actually catch it.
3x1x95kg - better
1x101kg - a teenie, tiny pb of 1kg. Pretty comfortable.
2x2x95kg - second set stronger
1x95kg - no more doubles in there

Seated DB shoulder press:

15x20kg
3x12x25kg

Then some tricep work, because I needed to do it, and some bicep and forearm curls to impress the missus with the gun show Cool

I have not felt very well for a couple of days. Feels a bit like minor food poisoning, but I'm not sure. Very much lacking in energy.

Anyway, still ended up in the gym.

Knee rehab and stretching.

Lat pulldown:

12x25kg
12x55kg
3x10x75kg
2x10x70kg

T-bar row:

5x12x35kg

Did a single set of fixed arm lat pulldown but couldn't be bothered. Really tired and drained. Time to rest, so a day off tomorrow.

That is most strange. It wasn't me that misspelled Youtube either!

Short session today. I perhaps did a bit too much stretching yesterday and had horrible cramps/DOMS in my legs overnight and this morning. OK now, but I'll do leg stuff tomorrow. I haven't felt great all week, and no idea why.

Bench:

15x20kg
8x60kg
6x70kg
2x85kg
3x6x95kg
10x95kg - that was very hard. RPE 10 and only just made the last rep

Tricep extensions, 4 sets.

That's it!

Another short session today. A lot of time in the car, the forwarder (forestry machine) and then sat at a meeting. Back wasn't 100% happy, but did OK.

(warmups and gentle stretching)

Deadlift:

5x70kg
5x100kg
3x120kg
2x5x140kg - fairly challenging I'd say. I can't bounce them as my form goes, so deadstop on every rep.

Lunges:

3x10x20kg - 10 on each leg, 20kg barbell on back and 2nd and 3rd sets were step back lunges instead of step forward. They are much more comfortable.

Glute ham bridges: 2x20xbodyweight

A bit of gentle stretching again.

Here is the second set of 140kg deadlifts:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeusldR1PnA

(if I try to embed it, it doesn't work. I don't know why it won't work. It makes no sense)

I found you account on YouTube and watched quite a few of the videos.

It brought back some memories. I could barely even remember the first timers comp I did up in Scotland 13 years ago that you also did. And then of course the Unit 20 comp. Great times.

Agreed. It was a lot of fun, and a bit of a mad year (2007). I ended up doing 6 comps that year.

Did you see that Ken Nowicki (who always seemed to just beat me, including at the Unit 20 comp) got really quite far in the sport? 4 times Scotlands Strongest Man, amongst other titles. Makes me feel less bad about always losing to him!
