Just wondering: has anybody here bought Eleiko competition bumpers, or does anybody know of a reasonably (at least relative to astronomical RRP!) priced source? Eleiko's site only lists Pullum and Escape Fitness as UK distributors: the former are not exactly renowned for their bargain prices, and the latter seem only to carry training bumpers.

I doubt that I will ever be able to afford any in any case, but out of idle curiosity, any insights welcome!

If you mean rubber OL competition weights I wouldnt bother. They wont stand the test of time and will more than likely split before you know it. If you dont mean them then forget everything I've said.Unhappy

We have Eliko Training Bumpers at Strath Uni gym, not sure where they got them from, but the price difference between the eliko's and the other brand they were looking at was £3k! Eek

The plates seem solid and preety good IMO.

Now that I wouldn't have expected. Those are precisely the ones that I meant. I assumed that they would be the most resilient - so is this a flaw inherent in all rubber bumpers? Does this mean that weightlifters (of which I am not one - I just like pretty rubber plates...) are constantly replacing split bumpers?

I think the issue is that competition weights are just that, Eleiko manufacture them with the view that they will be used in competition / championships and not on a day to day basis, hence they are known not to last that long when used as training weights.

I suspect the Eleiko training weights will be a different amalgum of rubbers than the competition version and hence more robust, they are also not callibrated which makes them a little cheaper, but not much!!

Ah, I see. Mind you, Eleiko does seem to say that the only difference is calibration / colour, with the ruber being the same (http://www.eleikosport.se/weightlifting/product.asp?PageNumber... I've never actually played with Eleiko competition plates, and so must profes complete ignorance - but we did inherit some aged rubber-encased training Eleikos (as opposed to rubber with steel hub) in a gym that I ran, and they were going strong after what must have been a couple of decades.

Addendum: I now realise that said aged bumpers are pictured in the accompanying avatar!

Hi Joni,
Thanks! Training is going.... well, like me, it's still going, and that's about the only good thing that I can say about it! I just feel old, tired, weak, and in pain most days, whereas you are clearly going from strength to strength! Funnily enough, I've been coerced into attending one of JT's training sessions this week (apparently public humiliation is part of the payment for a sled that he's built for me), and am looking forward to a painful demonstration of my weakness and decrepitude...

As a comparison we have Ivanko calibrated chrome plates in our gym but they are only used at comps. The problem is the chrome flakes off easily. Also they are difficult to handle as there is nothing much to grip on to. They are also ridiculously expensive.

For training, I'd just use dished iron plates or the rubberised ones with the holes in them for easy loading
