OK seeing as it's the holidays and I've got some time on my hands, I thought I'd put together some trees for the dungeon (well at least put some PBs up on a board). Firstly we need to sort out the criteria then we can compile the things. I was thinking (and I'll need your help on this) to base (some of) the weights on standard 105kg competition weights, so:

Log - for max, and for reps with 105kg (or 100kg?)
Farmers - max weight for 20m, 40m and max distance with 120kg (or 130kg?). The weight is the main factor, but a tie on weight then goes to time (which doesn't take into account the number of drops as it doesn't need to)
Yoke - Max for 20m (as farmers for ties on weight)
Axle - max overhead, max reps overhead with 100/105kg?
Axle deads - for max, and max reps with 200kg?
Stones - need your help on this one. Max weight/reps, platform height, times etc.?

Let's have some input and I'll get this thing sorted which should be good motivation for us all.

Hey I've just had a thought (now that I've been relegated to second place on farmers for 20m), are squat suits allowed on farmers walk? If they are the 150's better watch out! lol

Sounds pretty good on the whole - nice and heavy. I do think that you need to have some events that are based on the quickest time though, with that being the prevailing type of competition at the moment. I am all in favour of balls to the wall heavy, but you have to have some events that favour the quick guys!

I agree with you, that's why it's the quickest time WITH THE HEAVIEST WEIGHT that is the winner Grin Wink

yeah so the farmers and yoke would still have the times in them as well, right?

suggestion:

stones 54 platform:
- heavyest stone
- best triple
- best 5 reps

and when you get a wall, we could do some timed loads with multiple stones.

Yoke could be max for 20m and also some fixed weight best time.

Thing about the log is that it will be a wee while before me and olly are repping 100kg or 105kg log - but i think go for it anyway, because the empty field in the board will be an added motivation.

leave space for bodyweight as well next to the name Grin

Also, dont forget farmers holds!

130 for time
150 for time

that should do Wink

Yes the farmers and yoke would still have times, but the most weight would be the winner.

I like all your other ideas too. I forgot the holds! What fixed weight for time on the yoke? 260kg? Grin

We really do need a proper loading platofrm for the stones though!

i dont know anything about the yoke, but pick a yoke which is most likely to be in the comps, 260-280 maybe?

Having said that, your yoke is so tricky if we tame 280 we can be well proud Grin

oh one more comment: because novice comps are not really worth thinking about i think it is wise to just focus on heaviest weights for now to get as to the big boys league asap. Once we own 150kg farmers for 40, rep big logs, throw around 180kg stones we can start to be picky about times Grin

So while jonathans comment is true, it is just couple years too early Wink

You are right again, no point doing speed work with piss poor weights - we need to look to increase our weights all the time and the tree should encourage us all to do this and not pussy out.

What about weight for distance on the farmers 120 or 130? And axle over head for reps 100 or 105?

what are you skinny boy comps likely to have as the weight? Lets take that one.

Fraserburg has 120 for distance.

I am fine with 130 for distance, as jouko ahola says: always train with 130 because the comp weight is 120 (back in the days).

It's mad that that's all they used to use. Generally 120 or 130 is the weight for distance, so as Jouko says we will use 130Grin

Seeing as we're erring on the side of heaviness we might as well also make the axle for reps 105kg Grin

f**king brilliant!

I think axle for max, and reps with 105kg, same for log. 130kg farmers for distance and heaviest for 20+40m. Stones im happy with what you guys said, same for yoke.

New goal: 'Tree Domination'!

Joni, you just lament speed work cos you're so f**king slow!

Plus, speed and fitness work is really the way forward guys. Speaking to both Jamie Barr and Big Al has led me to the conclusion that you should spend nearly all your time working with weights that are not max effort. This means you will go into comps with more fitness, less injuries and a better capacity to finish gruelling 5-6event comps. You guys are all much stronger than me statically, but in the First timers comp I placed pretty well and it is entirely down to practice and fitness.

I do not dispute the idea of going heavy regularly. I just dispute this constant obsession with getting pbs every session. Seriously, as powerlifters did you ever do that?

Joni, looking at your stone lifting for instance - you can nail a 140stone to a good platform (very impressive) but in a recent log entry you could only manage 3x105. Fraserburgh has stones of 110, 120, 130. Heavy singles at 140 will not make you any stronger on endurance runs.

Olly, your log is a serious weak point for you (though I have no doubt that it will come up in due time). Each week though you go for a pb. Why? I shouldn't need to tell you this but it's just going to f**k you in the long term.

You need to be patient guys. You cannot just take up strongman and then in a few months expect that you can compete with the best. You all have strengths that are up there with the best in Britain at the moment (Jonny, with your holds with the 130's for instance). The thing is that you all have chronic weaknesses that you need to work on, instead of focusing on your strengths (farmers and stones).

The main training focus for you lot at the moment should be building speed and endurance on things like yoke (comp weights start at well over 300 in national comps dudes), take farmers for more than 40m. Do multiple sets of speed runs. Take the stone and get it to high chest 6-8 times. Learn to shoulder it (it makes chesting the stone seem like a doddle). Get on a bike and cycle for intervals of 10minutes.

I give you one parting tidbit of info. Last time that I saw Big Al training stones he was working with stones from 100-130 in series. Now he can shoulder the 150kg stone so this is light for him. Not only was he loading all of these in sucession, he was running to the other side of the hall at Markinch and back again between each rep.

Food for thought folks Grin

Jonathan

From what I have observed from reading training journals I think that is an excellent post.

I know almost nothing about strongman, and not that much about training, but that looked like an excellent post to me.

Now, there is some reason for the string of PBs - after all, when we first started doing the powerlifts seriously most of us probably rattled off a string of PBs as we learned the lifts. But I still think Jonathan's talking sense.
