Finally a half decent write up and it's great to see so many people at the excel cheering the lifters so enthusiastically:

Guardian article on the "masochism" of weightlifting.

Funny how training hard for something you love is considered masochism by the other 99.9999% of the world!

I heard one of the big raw american benchers of a decade or 2 past pressed in the range of 600lb raw in his garage alone after an all night bender....good thing he pressed it!

That was the legendary Lee Moran - probably more famous for his 3 squat attempts with 1003lbs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2vbjxB0bBk - arguably the most hardcore insane thing I've ever seen!

Anyone remember the Columbo episode when a gym owner kills his business partner in the gym and puts the body on the bench and a 250lbs bar across his neck? Don't know how much weight this bloke was lifting but sounds a bit fishy to me!

» Strongman gyms in West / Central London (Go to post)01-09-2011 @ 16:36
I've just joined this gym in Putney called physical culture:

http://www.physicalculture.co.uk/index.html

It has all the strongman implements like stones, axles, logs, farmer's walk and tires along with eleiko, ivanko and texas power bars, loads of plates, bumpers and good power racks and benches.

It has quite a long history - Gary Taylor and some other Strongmen and body builders have trained there. Check out their facebook page for more pics:

It's pretty empty in the mornings and afternoons so you don't get too many idiots bothering you.

Not sure if they do a daily rate but the owner is a good bloke and may let you do a free workout if you ask him.
