i noticed some guys squat and deadlift on the same day.
any reason for this or is it just prefrences?

when i did it a while ago, i found i struggled deadlifting after.

I made my greatest gains squatting and deadlifting on the same days. It's brutal but gets the volume in like nothing else.

In about 6 months of squatting and deadlifting on the same days in my routine, my squat went up from 172 to 200kg (these are comp lifts not gym hero crap) and deadlift up from 207.5 to 240kg. Incidentally, my bench also went up from 117 to 160kg too.

did it for about 2yrs, worked well, squats first then deadlift. Just need to fuel up beforehand

You have to do it on competition day.

It's something I usually do. If you squat and deadlift together it will give your back a full weeks recovery. Now and again I'll do them separately eg. if I want to max out and go for a PB on the pull, but I always try to leave 3-4 days between. I spoke to Eddie Kershaw about this a few years back and he said that's the way he and Ron Collins (355 kgs DL at 82.5) trained so I followed his advice and mostly done them together since.

When squats and deads are done on the same day,is it always best to squat first then deadlift?

Read that some people do heavy squats then light speed deads one week then swap it round the next with the haevy deads coming first.

Just wondered if it was best to do that or just balls to the wall every week on both?!

No bad thing. I have done it in the past to good effect.

I used to rotate between heavy pulling then light squating one week, then visa versa the next.

If I was going to go reasonable heavy both sessions, then I'd squat first then pull. You can deadlift to a reasonable standard straight after squating.

I and many, if not most, do not go balls to the wall every week anyway.

thats intresting. not what i thought.
yeah i can see you would need to be fueled. and when going for the 1rm can see the do ing them seperate. i tend to go no lower than triples now rather than maxing all the time like i used to when started. seemed to not work for me going down to 1rm.

when i am able to deadlfit again properly think ill start doing that.
can see it being tough if doing it after strongman events, will need enough time to recover for them. and after the events day aswell.

cheers, not response i expected tbh.
