As I understand it, the muscle fibres become stronger over time through conditioning. Young, as in relatively fresh muscle is more fragile. Or I could be talking bollox thats just what I've always been lead to believe.

It is a combination really, when there is talk of someone 'tearing a bicep' this 9/10 refers to the bicep ripping away from the connective tissues as opposed to a tear in the actual muscle itself.

Consistent bad form on things such as the deadlift will pressurise this as will copious amounts of steroid use from a young age, the muscle develops and matures much faster than the tendons and ligaments which steroids can have a degenerative effect on have chance too - guys who steadily build strength overtime tend to suffer less injuries, as while gear does cause weakening of tendons and ligaments this is offset more than enough by progressive overloading, however when done to fast this lengthy process does not have adequate time.

How does gear weaken tendons Griff? Not a leading question, I just genuinely have no idea. I could see how the tendons wouldnt gain strength while the muscle does, but am struggling to see how something like testosterone would weaken a tendon.

Excessive testosterone reduces collagen synthesis by around 50% if not more, collagen makes up tendons and the reduction in synthesis is effectivly like having the collagen synthesis rate of a pensioner.
This coupled with heavy lifting can cause inury, it is effectly like having the skelatal muscle of a Gorilla with the tendons of an old man.

Out of interest how many mg per week would be considered excessive testosterone ?
Does the problem get worse the more you take or is any amount over baseline bad for the tendons ?

Depends i think mate, bbers take the biscuit when it comes to abuse ive heard of pros on 5000mgs a week and upto 20iu hgh and 40iu insulin Eek

Think anythin above 2000mgs a week would do the trick as matt said

5000mgs a week is a scary amount of test and it blows my mind how much the big guys take, I realy wonder where they put it all. I am not anti steroid by any means but also see the benefit and challenge of developing strength naturaly. I know steroid use is rarely talked about for good reason in some cases but presume the strongest guys in the world must be jacked or they wouldnt be the best they could be. I like kevin Nee but looking at his freaky shoulders and general physique I have to guess that he is well juiced up. I realy feel that his injuries must be related to steroid use as has allready been alluded to. I suppose it might be best for him to hold back a tiny bit in his training to avoid injuries but it must be hard when constantly trying to push for more strength, not easy to strike a balance I would presume.
