So, standing BB press, in front of neck. I've basically never done them. All advice gratefully received.

In particular... what do you like for grip width, compared with your bench grip and to the rings?

I love the old military press rickster !!

as for grip , a nice medium grip , mabie little finger on the outer rings (somthing we are both familiar with ,for various reasons) I quite like seated military press, if they are still called that

I go an inch or so narrower than bench grip as my shoulders dont like wide grip.

Also, keep your core as tight as possible, glutes too. Once you try them you will feel the benefits of this.

the "proper" way to military press is to do it with your back straight standing and heals togeather.

Heels together because that's how they used to stand in the military (not sure if they still do?). But as far as overhead pressing goes that's bobbins and pretty pointless.

Rick I take a grip with my little fingers about an inch or so inside the rings which is after considerable playing around with. It's quite surprising actually how close it appears.

i am new to them as well, but one thing: even if you are not using leg drive etc, you are much stronger if you keep your core, glutes and everything really tight. Thats why the first rep is the hardest for me, the ones after that feel stronger because bringing the bar down i tense my body which gives a nice spring effect.

Joni - i get the same thing with miltary pressing, but i found if you brace yourself like your constipated before you press it seems to help (at the risk of causeing a mess!).

When you have your heals togeather it makes it much more difficult to cheat you cant realy dip like you can with a push press. also leaning back is very difficult because your heals are togeather - its quite cleaver realy.

But you only dip if you make yourself do it, so I don't see much point in putting your heels together to stop you doing that.

I thought the main reason it was called a military press was when soldiers were pressing the rifles over their heads. Obviously doing that with a 2 kilo rifle is a bit different than a military press in the gym so I'm sure they would put their feet apart otherwise!

One thing I think is important is tensing your whole body and pushing up as if you were doing a push press but without bending your legs, this helps get more momentum into the movement. Pushing your head through upon lockout is also important, as is making sure you press up in a straight line and not a curve by making sure your head is far enough back at the start.

In addition to what's been said, a little tip that your lower back may love you for:

Tilt your hips forward slightly. This greatly reduces strain on the lower back and puts you in a stronger position overall.

Your checklist should read as follows. Lock legs, tilt hips, tense abs, big breath and press.

Do you guys think its necessary to spend time doing military if you do plenty of push presseseses? I'm only doing push press at the moment cause its currently my fave exercise and I'm wondering should i add military after or on another day or not at all? Cheers.

I use the same grip for militarys as I do pushpress. Just wider than shoulder width.

Heres the video evidence

i found that if you did add a triceo work some where into you rutine i.e. anoth nite when your not doing them and use a varity of diffrent width grips this will help.

Thanks guys!

The comparisons with push press are interesting but not, for me, illuminating since I have never in my life attempted a push press Happy.

My bench grip is little fingers to rings, with my t-rex arms, so I'll try an inch or so narrower.

Cheers all.

Did them today, up to 60x3,4,5. It's very light on my shoulders, but the whole balance and stability - and confidence! - thing is interesting. It'll improve very quickly, I think - once I started to get my head through as the bar went up they got *much* easier.

All the advice was helpful - probably especially Fazc's. Thanks again.
