About 6 weeks or so ago, when deadlifting, I tore something in my back. After going to the doctors I was told that it was a ruptured disc, and that with rest it would go away or I'd need surgery. Now my back feels fine and I'm just about to return to training... anyone with a similar experience have any advice for getting back into it? I'm thinking of doing a light squat and bench session (particularly light for the crippling DOMS tomorrow...) but I'm not sure as and when I should build back into doing back stuff, particularly deadlifts.

As an update, I've been training about 2 weeks and it's alright. Done mainly lightish squats, bench and assistance work. Nothing directly lower back related yet, as my back is still a little tight.

Any similar experiences?

Lots mate. I'd suspect most on here have had a bulging/ruptured disc at some point. The spine has a very low circulation of blood, so it's beneficial to do higher reps and lighter loads for a few week prior getting back to heavy loading.

Jefferson curls seem to be a staple in preventing it happening again

Squatting isn't doing my back any good.

I have actually just gone through the process of getting an MRI after years of ignoring a back injury (see tagline). Before being granted access to an MRI I was sent to a consultant at a spinal clinic. The one positive thing that I came away with was having seen how keen the specialist was to recommend that I continue weight training (although not necessarily the same exercises) even without yet knowing the full extent of my injury.

My suspicion is that I have a prolapsed disc. The GP who I saw before the referral to the consultant thought a damaged vertebrae was more likely.

I had the MRI a few weeks ago and am still waiting for the results, so I don’t really have any good advice to share yet (at least not any advice at this stage that’s based on a successful recovery), other than to say start out very light when you return. Also focus on keeping your form spot on. Slightly higher reps with lighter weight to carefully rebuild strength and muscle in the injured area is likely to be a good approach.

Seek medical advice though and take it easy. Good luck.

Ive had a few set backs don't think I've damaged any discs but have certainly done stuff to my si joint, but I'd say if you haven't done much I really found walking really good and getting general function then working from there with the light stuff, but I really do think walking does help to get the blood flowing as AMH says just take it baby steps, my biggest problem was not giving myself enough time to heal.
