Lads,

My mate;

-6 foot 5
- maybe 16 stone (bf maybe 15+%)
- Plays 2nd row in a decent Rugby side..

- Squat, Doubt he can do them properly, but claims "Not far off 180kg"
- Deadlift, " ", claims 160kg
- Bench, not sure, at a guess a genuine 95kg maybe.

Anyway, I have spoken to him about his training, he seems to do typical bb'er work, and cites his strength as 'his biceps'. Now, bis are undoubtedly useful in some situations, but he has legs that make mine look huge.

My questions are;

1) What routine would you put him on?
2) How would you convince him that this is how he should train?

Bear in mind he plays rugby twice a week and has little/no idea of how to perform the squat, deadlift and even bench press.

We'll call this, operation BEANPOLE!

TBH I wouldn't waste my time. I gave up long ago advising friends/gym goers on how to train. You'll spend hours advising him and he'll just f**k it all off and do what he wants anyway.

Sounds like he just needs to do a couple of whole body sessions a week. Maybe 4 exercises per session using 5x5 or 3x10 type loading. Also depends on whether he is in-season at the moment. If so you'll probably need to concentrate more on tech and power as opposed to pushing the loads. He won't thank you if you maxing out on squats and deadlifts the night before a match Tongue

Thats a good point Tony. I always give my mates a chance to prove they are serious but after that I don't bother. Not many do stay the course.

Considering the explosive effort needed by Rugby as well dont forget the joys of (no cursing at me pls) Olympic lifting training as well - e.g. High pulls, power snatchs on top of the band/chain squats.

Another option is be really evil and introduce them to 20 rep squats followed by high rep power cleans Grin

I like the idea of 20 rep squats and 20 rep powercleans.

Need to teach him how to do both first though, or it's pointless.

Think I may just kidnap him and stick him in a squat rack for a year, with 200kg and a decent bar, no racks or spotters, and a box that he has to squat to depth onto, or he gets electrocuted.

everybody responds in diffrents ways to weight training, so i would just concentrat on the core three lifts with sqauts, deadlifts and for him incline benching and over head pressing if he's in the rugby thhen the extra strenth in your shoulder will help greatly to take impact and knock the f**k out of guys when you chanrge through.

Yeah good idea.

Squat
Incline Bench

Deadlift
Overhead Press

Completed as many times as possible (2/3 times a week sometimes), once a week others.

I'll tell him to do faggot work after the main exercises.
