broccoli has started flowering. we have gone from no heads to approx 2 inches wide overnight. Its quiet amazing to see. What we have lost I wonder? Most things we need are within nature. Oh, and all well netted. However, we have planted marrygolds which we are informed help keep the bad insects away,

In the face of food shortage and sever hardship for most,Why are the governments not telling us to stop fussing our perfect lawns and grow our own food? A question worth reflecting on dont you agree

Amazing news on the broccoli front - standard green calabrese? I have purple sprouting and my cheat sheet had a mix up. Purple sprouting takes aaaaaages to mature.

Agree with your last statement 100%. People worrying about money for food when you can grow a fair bit with about 6 square metres of land! 1 square foot will see your parsley and corriander needs, couple of pots for tomato plants, celery takes up next to no room. Just common sense to grow your own.

My Daikon radishes are forming bulbs Happy

standard green calabrese mate, and almost 3.5 inches already...it seems to flower fruit very rapidly. we have the purple seeds but not planted yet, tbh, very pleased with the green. cabbages and caulie leaves are huge ...about 2 sqr foot so each plant needed a lot of space.

I think its almost time to start getting the beetroot up. about 1-1.5 inches wide so not sure? never eaten the stuff. we do have lettuace, rocket and now spring onions ready for the week ahead.

Yeah I have a very similar issue - got some monster purple sprouting brocolli, but I also have SuperSchmeltz kohlrabi that get up to 10 kilos each and they're kinda close. Might rip the brocolli up later on and I don't think i'm gonna have much to do with them other than compost.

Lettuce I planted recently seem to have all settled in well and are growing nicely.

purple sprouting brocolli will be going in after we harvest the green brocoli...of which, we now have multiple heads on each plant.

Caulies - these started to head at the begining of the week and already are fist size. Amazing. Beetroot seems to have doubled overnight as well.

Curly kale and spinach now planted. Will have to keep on top of these crops as will be our all year staples

cuecumelons, peppers, cape gooseberries and various melons all doing very well in the poly greenhouse.

We are diarising everything scientifically.

Oh, and an old friend came up to see me today. He is awake and has very little people to speak about whats happening/ happened. The one who is always calling me telling me about what comes next (hes been spot on these past 2 years) I think he went away with the realisation that he needs to get on with preperation. I have seeds and building knowledge, he has engineering skills.

A nice day with a sane friend.

So...

we pulled back the leaves and saw that the caulies are approx 6-8 inches accross.we harvested one today and some broccoli.

Will replace with purple as we go.

we wont be starving Grin

I've been eating bbq cauliflower with buffalo sauce (ketchup, tobasco and white wine vinegar) lately. Makes a nice change from cauliflower cheese.
Radish and celery goes well with it dipped in mayo, gorgonzola and sour cream sauce. Better eating than chicken wings.

After looking at the daily growth of my daikon radishes, I've decided I won't be bothering with normal varieties any more. Tuesday last week they were the size of a cigarette butt, 6 days later they are the size of a large thumb, and lord knows how much is growing below the ground.

Might be going to Cyprus in the next couple of days - bit of time relaxing fishing, fixing the gym a bit (guttering and pouring some concrete for my gazebo underneath the grape vines). Have to see if I can convince my boss that I can work there, but there's no internet at mine so i might have to hang out at my neighbour's house and at my friend's house.

"My elderly gran has fallen over twice in the last week after an eye operation. Her vision is good in one eye so she has depth perception issues". İt's all true apart from the last week bit. She fell over twice in April. I'll be claiming about 5 hours work a day. Leaving Thursday night.
