Do you guys find that it is more difficult to lift with calibrated plates than thicker rubber plates like these https://images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/513cmoJVQPL.jpg ?

Or do you notice no difference at all?

Calibrated plates do make the lift harder (assuming we are talking about deadlifts), as the weight is closer to the centre of the bar, and thus you get less whip.
That said, it makes squatting easier for the same reason.

I use the 50s and 25s on deadlift for this reason. Just to make it slightly tougher.

calibrated plates weigh very close to stated number, within maybe 10g and
centre of mass very much at the geometrical centre (e.g. uniform weight distribution)

cheap rubber plates can be as much as +/-10% out.
when you've got 300kg on bar that can be a noticeable difference.

Calibrated plates feel harder because 300kg is 300kg! Cheaper plates are easier because 270kg costs less than 300, and the average Joe won't be lifting that much anyway.

I actually prefer calibrated plates, for squats they generate less whip on the bar due to been closer to the centre and for deads they have less rolling resistance on the platform which is good for someone like me who pulls with a roll in

Calibrated plates is the precise weight and rubber gym plates are variable (usually weigh less).
Calibrated plates are significantly more expensive and worth the investment. I would prefer to know the weight is exact for measured productive training.

How would one recognise a plate that is "calibrated"?

expensive ahoy !!

I guess they are the very slimline ones , I think the ones I used at a BPC comp were also calibrated, but being the BPC , they where CHROMOLY PLATED

Get s**t plates. Stick bits of plasticine or lead to make the weight needed so it's exactly the weight you need. Send money saved to me.

I saw the plates and they instantly looked too small. They were indeed about 3cm too small so getting a pair of regular sized 20s for myself and well as Voit plates. They seem to like Voit over here.
