27/02/16 - Comp day!

The competition organisors decided to (at the last minute) split the novice category into two - an over 105kg and an under 105kg category. Unfortunately (from my perspective at least), they also decided to lower the weights in my category slightly. So the events went from

Yoke 220kg - 200kg
Log press for reps 90kg - 80kg
Squat unchanged, still 3 1RM attempts
Farmers to sled drag 100kg per hand - 90kg per hand, wasn't sure if sled weight changed
Stone over yoke 90kg - 80kg

This dissapointed me as I already felt like the comp was slightly too light for me. Anyway, here's how it went:

Yoke (200kg for 20m no turn)
Set off slightly too fast causing me to stagger a bit towards the middle of the course. Managed to maintain my composure though and regained my balance. Not perfect but finished in 8.1 seconds, winner got 6.5 seconds.
2nd

Log press (80kg for reps in 70 seconds)
Due to the drop in weight I decided I'd try to one motion the log to get quicker reps in. One motioned the first 4 reps then fatigue kicked in and the reps slowed. Finished on 9, another 5 seconds and I'd have had 10; strength wasn't the issue, it was speed and conditioning.
Joint 1st

Squat
Conditions were not ideal, only got 3 warmup sets in (90kg, 120kg & 150kg) then had to wait half an hour for first attempt and between attempts. Felt very cold by the time it came to lift so went conservative
170kg - good lift
190kg - good lift, easy, could double or triple
205kg - fail, dissapointed but feel I could have nailed this with better conditions
2nd

Farmers walk in to arm over arm sled drag (90kg x 10m into 125kg ? Sled)
Farmers were no problem but I'd never done arm over arm before so wasn't sure how that'd go. Ended up being fairly smooth but probably could have gone faster with more practice. No stumbles though and overall a good event.
3rd

Stone over yoke (80kg to 48" for reps in 70 seconds)
Had never used tacky before but tried it today - massive difference! Leader was on 14 so I knew I had to be rapid, ended up trying to be too fast and had to drop the stone from my lap 3-4 times due to rushing the pickup. Got a great rhythm going towards the end, I think if I'd have started like that I'd have won the event. Got 12 reps total
4th

They also had a 120kg stone lying around so I figured while I was tackied up I'd have a go (as it's the weight for my next comp). Managed to lap it but didn't have to strength to load it over yoke. Think I could do it fresh, another couple of months training and I'm confident I will be able to rep it.

Overall 2nd place. Pretty happy with today, wish it was heavier but still enjoyed it and found it to be a good experience. Can only get better from here!

Call me crazy but I decided to get to the gym and train a little chest tonight!

27/02/16 - Saturday

Pause bench
Bar x a couple of sets
60kg x 5
80kg x 5
90kg x 5
100kg x 5
110kg x 4 PB
90kg x 10 PB

Incline db bench (very low incline)
40kg's x 8
32kg's x 12
Shoulders were absolutely dead at this point

Incline hammer strength
70kg x 12
70kg x 11
70kg x 12

Cable crossovers
3x15

Facepulls
3x15-20

Done. In hindsight probably wasn't the best idea to train tonight but oh well lol. Rest tomorrow then a light(ish) week next week. Should be ready to put in some hard graft after that, for Rotherham's strongest man U105 Cool

Very happy with today's squats given how tight I felt in the hips/lower back/shoulders. My right bicep tendon seems to be very sore as well, think it's from all the stones on Saturday. Will have to be careful.

Great progress, your hitting a P.B everyday!

Do you have any more competitions lined up?

Yes mate, entered rotherhams strongest man U105 in May. Weights are quite a bit heavier so need to keep up the good training! Events are:

280kg yoke - think this will be fine
21" deadlift 300kg for reps - no idea how strong I am from this height but just going to continue working on regular deadlifts for now
60kg dumbbell for reps - never trained this event
120kg stone for reps over yoke - think I should be good for a couple of reps by then
22kg forward hold

Almost definitely entering yorkshires strongest man U105 as well (September). Bodyweight is about 91-92kg at the mo, so plenty of weight to gain over the next year! Will probably be more competitive in the 105 class in 2017.

03/03/16 - Thursday

Today was supposed to be a rest day, with deadlift & events tomorrow but was sat at home bored so decided to train today instead! Plus working a 10 hour shift tomorrow so it wouod have been difficult to fit in training

Deadlift
60kg x 3
100kg x 3
120kg x 3
140kg x 3
160kg x 2
170kg x 5,5,5 - did these beltless
170kg x 9 PB
Wanted 10 on the last set but can't complain too much, everything felt a bit heavier than usual today. Probably because I haven't deadlifted in two weeks, plus maybe training 4 days in a row after a comp on Saturday is catching up to me!

Yoke
125kg x 20m
185kg x 20m
215kg x 20m
235kg x 30m - gone heavier at YST but this is a PB on my POS yoke which wobbles all over the place Grin

DB press
25kg x 3 each arm
30kg x 3 ea
35kg x 3 ea
40kg x 3 ea
40kg x 3 ea
40kg x 3 ea
These were all comfy and PBs by default, confident I'll press 60kg for a few by May now.

Farmers hold
60kg's x 30 seconds
80kg's x 30 seconds
100kg's x 30 seconds - oh my god this hurt, hands were numb afterwards

Rolling thunder
40kg
50kg
60kg
These were hard after everything else, think a PB is there fresh. Determined to turn grip into a strength

05/03/16 - Saturday

Been thinking to myself that with a 100kg x 3 log press I should definitely have a better bench than 125kg, so decided I'm really going to start putting some graft into benching. Hopefully that'll give me good carryover into overhead strength as well.

Pause bench
Bar x a couple of sets
60kg x 5
80kg x 3
95kg x 2
107.5kg x 5 PB
107.5kg x 5
107.5kg x 5
107.5kg x 5
107.5kg x 5
Very happy, this was heaviest I've done for a paused set of 5, and did it for a 5x5! Was at a different gym today on a competition bench, think that made a difference

Pause incline bench
60kg x 8
80kg x 6
90kg x 6
100kg x 4
This was a higher incline than I'm used to using so was fairly happy with this

DB bench
42kg's x 8
46kg's x 5 PB
46kg's x 5

DB flies
20kg's x 12
22kg's x 8
22kg's x 8
^ this was heaviest I've ever gone on flies, have to say it didn't feel too great on the shoulders. May leave these out for now, bit of a pussy lift anyway tbf

Facepulls
4x10-15

Good overall today, feel like bench is on the right track.

150kg x 5

Front squat
120kg x 6 PB
120kg x 6
120kg x 7 PB - brought the intensity for this set Cool

Glute ham raise
BW x 8
BW + red band x 8
BW + blue band x 8 PB

Seeing as I'm still really just building a base, I decided that I'd be better off focusing on the strict press for now in the gym. Will stick to using push press just on strongman implements.

50kg x 3
60kg x 2
70kg x 1
80kg x 3 PB - YES!
80kg x 2
80kg x 2
80kg x 2

Strict standing DB press
30kg's x 9 PB
30kg's x 8
30kg's x 8

Seated lateral raises
10kg's x 12
12kg's x 10
12kg's x 10

Seated bent over flies
10kg's x 12
12kg's x 12
14kg's x 10
14kg's x 10

Very solid today seeing as I've put in a ton of graft over the last three days, back and legs were knackered and shoulders / upper chest were pretty tight as well. Looking forward to a much needed rest day tomorrow, too bad I'll be spending it doing a 12 hour split shift Roll-Eyes
