Obvious caffeine can benefit training. Personally I struggle to do anything without it! However I do wonder if some of that may well even be "in the head" Two large espressos give me an almost instant effect, far before you would expect the caffeine to have actually worked

Perhaps. Placebos often 'work'.
I'd just prefer to stay away from simple sugar rather than encourage it's use. If I was the OP I'd try the big hit of caffeine approach first before going back after sugar.

Sorry if I was a little blunt in the previous post. I was watching something on deadline day on sky sports and lost interest in typing. Happy

The reason I put it down to the energy drinks was because that's what I cut out.

I still take caffeine throughout the day and just before training.
This is why I put it down to the sugar. As I cut this out completely.

I was being careful not to call it a placebo effect. Whilst it may well be nothing more than that, I wonder if there is some brain taste link which has an actual real effect.

Swapped to decaffeinated coffee recently. Didn't wake up properly for a week!
