I found it ok but sessions are long, smolov on the other hand....
A lot of people use their comp maxes and not their current max on these routines

yeah i lasted a couple of weeks. like you say the sessions are just so long. sorry but i dont have 3+ hours to spare per session. that's fine if you're a professional athlete but real life is a little different!

Sacrifices my friend. I may/may not ever be elite from investing so much, but one thing is certain; not investing I will NEVER be a professional athlete.

Have you tried it? It might be because I'm using light weights but it is actually kind of "easy". 80% for 4 sets of 2 is a typical top set. Most people can do 80% of their 1rm for 6+ reps.

Also, he writes different programs for nattys vs not.

Of course, for stronger folks YMMV.

2 weeks of 2 tens
2 weeks of 2 eights
3 weeks of 2 fives
2 weeks of 2 triples
2 weeks of 2 doubles
Then max

For deadlifts I go 1 set of 5 followed by 1 set of 5 off blocks
Each week up the weight 5kg then down to 1 set of triples
Then up the weight for afew weeks and hit 1 set of doubles
Then max.

Russian masters helped my strict press a lot aswell

looks nice and simples, is that 2 sets of 10s,8s etc

Other than Stronglifts/Madcow the only programme I’ve done so far is 5/3/1 and I really didn’t like it. It could just be that the programme was never intended for someone with my low strength level/experience but basically my recovery wasn’t being taxed in the slightest. My lifts started to go backwards and form started breaking down until I added extra squat and bench days. So I’m now running an entire cycle of 5/3/1 (minus deloads) on squats per week and basically doing the same for bench, adding weight to my training max every week, while running Ortmayer/Magnusson for deadlifts. Far too early to say how this will pan out, but I’m enjoying feeling like I'm actually pushing myself a bit now.

I think the stock 531 program is too low volume unless you are older or play a sport. I ran 531 for a long time, prob around two years. I saw some good progress on it but I nearly always ran it squatting and benching twice per week. Some times I also overhead pressed and deadlifted twice per week. My favourite 531 template is pairing the lifts together and doing the 531 lifts and then 5x5 at about 80% as the assistance. For example squat 531 and then 5x5 deadlift or 531 bench and 5x5 overhead.

Anyone know the training plans the really top level IPF lifters use or would they be too advanced for an intermediate

Milsy is probably the best person to ask but from what I can tell the common theme is high frequency

Sadly when it comes to the top level guys it's not a case of one size fits all most program's and methods vary so much from lifter to lifter as they have developed them over years of training and found what works for them at that point in their career I have found a lot of the elite guys put a massive focus on pre hab and technique work within the training plan

This happened for me too. Got weaker across the board doing 5/3/1.

I have used a few programs. My thought and opinions...

I followed quite a few Sheiko programs back to back to good success (~4 months worth from memory) it was good, but got boring. good initial progress though.

Russian masters squat routine - but used for deadlifts. Not fun or sustainable.

Smolov Jr for bench - fun and challenging, temporary gains at end that disappeared rapidly, and developed slight shoulder impingment (now resolved from physio and rehab exercises).

Current - my own blend of aspects from many programs, elements of Bolton's supersize your strength, but more focus on main lifts, mixed with good of fashions linear progression and tapering. Been good fun, no injuries so far, and a raft of rep PBs - how well it's carry over to top end strength. Been in calorie excess which has helped, but I have found it good fun. I recently posted an overview of it in my log if anyone's interested.

Have tried many off the shelf peaking programs, but haven't found one that I like other than reducing volume from some of the Russian 7-9 week ones.

Also did 5/3/1 for a bit. It felt more like a warm up than a proper program, so went heavy after I did the 'plan'. Was fun aiming for rep PBs regularly, but didn't feel it streched me enough.

work and my business come first. i can't sacrifice either of those to train 3 hours plus at a time. thats just the realities of having a mortgage and bills to pay. those are my circumstances, yours may be entirely different to mine in which case i get where you are coming from.
