These may been abit of a newb question's but I am woundering how you more experianced guys train

1. recently I completed sets of deads but I wasn't happy as I thought I took too long between the reps on the last set (was happy with form), maybe 5-6 breaths between reps 6,7,8. How long do you consider too long?

2. doing heavy sets of 3x3 I got 3 2 0 now would you call it at that and move on to next exercise, or drop the weight 5kg and then re do the last set?
I kinda feel that strength being the goal I have maxed out so inorder to push drop the weight and rep out the final set.

It depends on a few things, I'm going to assume it wasn't a technical failure, technique was ok, you slept the night before, consumed enough food prior to this session and are not suffering from any illness......

If it was a gradual build up to that very session then you failed, then you are probably hitting 'over-reach', and now is the perfect time to deload/taper/intensify and reduce the overall volume so that gains can be realised. If you keep accumualting/failing while in over-reach then you will over-train and probably injure or become stale.

The other probability is that you didn't build up to that session, and just failed as the session was too hard, in which case you need to review your training methods/periodization plan.

As for rest between sets, I take as long as needed... even if it's 5 mins. My goal isn't to be able to recover quicker in lieu of max strength, it's the other way round.

however rest between reps is referred to as 'cadence', I don't think it matters. That said, reps '6,7 and 8' don't exist in my training vocabulary. Always 5 and below, unless it's isolation stuff (which I am reluctant to advise unless it's for a VERY VERY VERY specific weakness or injury prevention)

1. Doesn't really matter, as long as your not standing up/racking the bar/fetching a drink between reps.

2. Sounds like you hit a 3RM and tried to repeat it, a 3x3 rep scheme would usually be calling for something around a 4RM or even a 5RM done for 3 reps and repeated.
Unless you've done a lot of work building up to that topset I would do a couple of down sets. May be advisable to adjust weight for worksets in future and not see the numbers as set in stone.

1. Glad it doesn’t really matter. I’m down in the start pos for dead’s, I check position, get some breaths in then lift. I think if I start going over 6 breaths I’ll end that set.
2. I think if it happens this mini cycle I’ll do a drop set. I did an increase of 10kg from the last full 3x3 I did so looks like I jumped too high. Will take smaller jumps from now on. Live and learn.

Nice to get practical advice from more experienced lifters. cheers.Happy

If I didn't get the 3rd on the middle set without a decent reason then i'd drop the weight on the 3rd set as its clearly too heavy.

Redo the week before and see if its still good, then go up half of what you did Happy

Personally I would have called it a day after the second set, theres no point failing lifts in the gym unless it is when you are going for a PB. In that situation I would have done the first 2 sets then dropped the weight by 20kg then aimed to do one very good single to finish on a high note.

I still do x

Speaking of missing people, Turner rang me again last night. I think he's lifting sometime this year and he's coming round to the gym for some info apparently. He only weighs 70K now. What are the latest Bwt classes? he'll want to know, and need a coach, and a lift home. YARRR.

I dont know, or care, what the bwt classes are for powerlifting so no point in asking me. As far as a coach and a lift home. He has destroyed countless of my braincells and several ties when giving him lifts previously, and for that reason I am out!!!

and, he must be shredded (or really ill looking) at 70k!!! But, BUT, he is still lifting!!! He has outlived many a 'serious' strongman / powerlifting type from this forum, he's great!!!

I miss you too, I think we should arrange a night out or a club do or something.

The weight classes are
59kg
66kg
74kg
83kg
I wont list the rest as they don't apply to Turner.

By coach do you mean someone to shout instructions to him and have him ignore them all?
