Hi guys,

Sorry if this topic has been done to death. My back is only just feeling like it's returning to normal and I'll hopefully be doing my first squat/deadlift session next Saturday. I was wondering whether now would be a good time to try and switch my style to sumo? I'm going to have to be lifting super-light to begin with anyway, not to mention the fact I feel weaker than a kitten. I've read it takes quite a while to learn the technique involved for sumo, so being weak to begin with might be a good time to start.

Any thoughts/advice?

Where you always planning to turn sumo? If it dosn't hurt you back then worth a try. Be carfull though as you probably have a tendancy to still 'pull' convntional i.e. lots of back even if you do put the feet out wide. I noticed this a few weeks ago.

The sumo experts out there may be of more help.

I can't say I have ever planned to pull sumo; it was something Ben at British Barbell mentioned a few weeks ago. Seeing as I'm going to be "starting again" so to speak, I thought now might be the best time to give it a go and see what I get out of it.

Am I talking out of my arse again?Tongue

Nothing wrong with having a bash at sumo. You may find it's the one for you! I did, it wasn't Tongue However you'll be getting some good coaching were I was trying to have a stab on me own.

There's no harm in having a try at it, just take it in very small steps and think technique rather than weight. I've lifted in both styles, I switched to sumo after a back injury and now I'm back to std stance as I'm stronger that way.

Aye, i went to it after i injured my back. After a month and a half of only sumo pulled a 5kg conventional PB with no back pain.

I specifically asked you because fellow sufferers of the same condition generally recognise it in others.Wink

Conventional pulling is for men.

Sumo is for the gays.

I have sumo and conv training cycles, either way they are both roughly the same. I pull better conventional when I'm heavier, the sumo gives me more at a lighter body weight.

I hurt my back and my conventional form was generally s**tty. Took me a full year to get a PB with sumo, but I think it's worth it and that I'll eventually pull more than I ever would've conventional.

No one can argue that you're going to get more from sumo if you're an equipped lifter also. I was suprised at the last IPF Worlds at how many pulled sumo, a vast majority.
