Whilst nicotine is clearly very addictive and that level of physiological addiction takes different ingestion levels to achieve amongst different people. It's rare that it happens instantly.
That suggest that those addicted chose to do it for a period of time before they became addicted, and therefore gained some, maybe ill conceived, benefit.
