Hi,

Just joined the board... changing my plans from muscle to strength. I would like to compete maybe in a year or so who knows, depending how things go. I just have a question or two if anyone can help.

What exactly classes as 'equipped'? For example I sometimes us a belt for squats and deadlifts (but not straps), does that class as equipped, or is it just bench shirts etc?

What kinds of totals are required for novice competition? I have seen it written that 500 is a decent starting total.

My stats currently are;
24 years old.
90kg.
S160kg D205kg B125kg

Cheers any help is much appreciated.

those are unequipped lifts if you only use a belt. You are also allowed wrist wraps (not straps).

Equipped lifting incorporates suit, shirt and knee wrap usage.

500 would be a good start for the under 90kg cat mate, out of interest i looked up online some time ago and for under90kg youd need a 520 kg total to qualify for British, but thats minimum so to be competitive at national lever would be alot more but for club level 500 qould be a good start for sure, theres no reason why you can compete if you aint got a 500 total tho. start competing when ever you want, all the experience you get is good experience

With those totals, you should arrange to compete straight away. You will love it and gain tons of knowledge and enthusiasm from the experience. Powerlifting is a great sport and is blessed with a supportive and friendly community of lifters.

More than that though, if you ponce about talking about competitions you never actually do, I will track you down like a dog and slaughter you and your family without mercy.

Ah right - cheers for that Ozzie, didn't want to enter a competition and end up looking a tool, although that will probably happen anyway!

I haven't really trained for strength up until now, apart from trying my 1RM's for fun/ego. So I am hoping that with a bit of power specifics they will go up.

Nah trust me I am not one of those to go on and on about something and never actually follow it through. I will track down some proper powerlifters and get my form checked first though. Thanks for the reply.

I think watching would be a good idea, my experience of powerlifting and strongman is limited to say the least.

Are you from Portsmouth? They are a couple of good lifters down your way - Dean Bowring, Monica and John Porter, Nick Rees.

I'll try and find out where they train for you.

That would be excellent - I work/train in Portsmouth during the week, most weekends I am in Doncaster. Bit of a trek I know!

Yeah it's like having a split personality, but I get the best of both worlds. Major downside is trying to get a meal at motorway services for less than £200.

South Yorkshire Open Unequipped Powerlifting Championships is on at the gym above The Forresters Arms pub in Adwick-le-Street, Doncaster on 6th June. Lifting will start at 11 a.m.

Why not pop along and have a look.

There'll be about 40 or more lifters having a great time. Some new to it, some old hands. Presentation of trophies and food and drinks downstairs in the pub after the lifting. It's a great day out.
