AdamT said:I wouldn't let them. There isn't as much technique involved as Olympic lifts. No need to start too young.

If they wanted to learn Olympic lifting, then that's different.

Pullups, press ups, dips etc. When kids are in their teens, they will be wee machines. Introduce weights then.

Whilst bwt only exercises are often recommended for children I would strongly disagree they are the best choice for many children.

Some children simply cannot do bodyweight exercises. Weights, whether machine or free weights, allow lighter and progressive loads to be used.

I would imagine I'll let her go heavier only as long as the reps are easy. So, along the lines of what Macca has said, if she can do multiple sets of 5+ With Bob in technique then maybe we add a 1.25kg plate per side. I'll keep her a long way from failure. Plus I'm not a big fan of high reps on deadlift tbh.
20kg was no problem. Either was 25kg. But until I know she has it nailed I won't let her go heavier.

That seems sensible.
He hasnt been down with me since xmas (too many new toys, games etc)

Maybe some Trenbelone would give him the kick!

Joking aside i started boxing at 5 and did light weights and BW stuff a few years later. It did me no harm and Definately didnt stunt my growth!

I think Kids are generally pretty sensible with things like this - they do stuff when they enjoy it and stop when they don't...as long as they are supervised it should all be good.

This has turned out to be a pretty useful thread. Cheers guys.
I train in my garage so Daisy has access to training without going to a gym. I've also never pushed her into lifting any weights. She brought it up originally. Think I'll just encourage her whenever she suggests training a bit. See how it goes.

If kids have a passion for it, then fair enough. I just doubt starting that young makes any difference. If anything it might work out detrimental.

Agree that pushing kids to do something isn't a good idea. That's not the case though. I was just after opinions on the safety aspects of deadlifting mainly. If she doesn't want to do it, that's fine. But if she enjoys it and it can be done safely, the advantages of learning how to increase strength and muscle could help for the future

A useful thread on sugden?!
I cant,In all good conscience sit back and watch this happen...

My boy plays football every saturday and trains monday and tuesday so he dosnt always come to the gym with me. But he really enjoys the gym, Powerlifting and strongman. I think its great for the kids to know there are other sports out there.

Ooo, nice thread.

I will devise pull-ups press ups etc for mine Vikings when they are about 4...and martial arts.

Not convinced about deads at the mo. However, would be more concerned about isolation exercises or even worse...machines designed for average height adults.

Weights for kids = better body awareness and image and strength = self esteem and discipline. what the hell is there not to like?

I was a tinny kid and then discovered weights at 13 ish... I credit my whole ego and adult success to 1 thing...IRON. Lift on children, lift on.

My son was nearly 8 when he deadlifted an axle weighing 55kg for 3 reps. He benched 20kg for 3 too.

He's 12 now and squats 45kg for around 6 reps. Quite a strong kid but lives away from me now so only trains every other weekend with me.

Having thought about this, I've decided it depends on how much the kids weigh.

I'm not sure the logistics of getting them onto the bar, but I reckon if it was balanced enough, I could deadlift a few toddlers per side for reps. Full reps too, no straps and good lockouts.

Slamming the bar back to the ground for best effect?

100% yes, I hate slow eccentrics on deadlifts. Besides, I assume Bryce and Sadler would have the kids wearing hard hats and high vis jackets. Health and safety and all that.

can we keep this thread going please?

I'm interested in training and nutrition for my toddlers.

My 2 year old is only 29lbs but as wide and deep as he is tall. His 1 year old brother is almost as big..25lbs with wider shoulders.

I want to get them the start I wish Id had.

But I have also put at least 6 people in hospital training with me over the past 25 years...Roll-Eyes

What has worked for you guys training your little future Daddy's bodyguards???

I thought about starting them with gymnastics 3-5?
